Hmm...the forum worked for me earlier today. Just now when I clicked on a link from a browser opened to the forum, I found that the boards had been hacked again. :(

Sun Mar 13, 2005 3:42 am

Yay. What a pleasant surprise.

Aside from various bits of profanity, the hacker apparently wants us to update our version of phpbb, which is something no one but Sam can do. Just in case anyone was wondering, our non-Sam Admin and mods only have controls over the forums and nothing to do with site or updating the forums. Which could be annoying at times, but having a benevolent dictator isn't such a bad deal. In the world of Nepets fansites, we're pretty far down on the popularity list, no matter how cool we are. So why someone would care enough to even bother hacking us is beyond me.

Maybe because we're the ones who are short our dictator?

Dunno, how many fansites are between NC and the "most popular" fansite -- no need to start an argument over what that is -- and of them, how many are still running an older, and presumably more exploitable, version of phpbb? I only noticed one other Neopets fansite high-profile enough to be posted here that fell victim to the last worm attack. The others are presumably running newer versions.

I think it's probably just because the older verion of phpbb and lack of a person with access to fix problems with the fourms make NC vulnerable.

I didn't mean that there was a lack of opportunity. Just motivation. I suppose I could ask the same question of most scammers on Neopets and end up with the same answer though...

Bah. I'm too old for a change of forum address. I'll get lost and wander off into a golf forum or something.

I guess my point is that if they were looking to hack *a* Neopets fansite, then NC is an obvious choice. It's going to be much easier to hack, and likely to remain hacked for a longer period of time, then a site like PPT -- which is higher-profile in the world of Neopets fansites but probably more secure and likely to be fixed more quickly.

Why would someone would want to hack a Neopets fansite in the first place? Danged if I know. Because if they hack Paypal the might get arrested?

Sun Mar 13, 2005 12:03 pm

Or because by hacking Neopets forums they may then gain access to Paypal and suchlike due to some idiotic users that don't use unique passwords?

Yeah, I'm being consumed with bitterness about now :) I just hope they don't know my account names.

The site is in a different situation then PPT and other neo help sites. Since I don't own the site, or frequent it enough, I don't feel comfortable going into details about something I may only have a few of the right points on.
But I know that the situation is vastly different then anything here on PPT.

And don't criticize them. It doesn't exactly keep up good site relations, nor is it fair to the members that frequent both sites. Nor to the members that come here specifically from Neocolours.

I wasn't insulting anyone, WHAT GAVE YOU THAT IDEA o_O

If you can point out where I said you were insulting them, i'll get back to you. And if you do, PM it to me. As I said before, anyone who wants to argue, can PM me.

Edit:

Rare. This is very rare, but i've unlocked the thread.
Why?
Because it actually does appear that Neocolours has been hacked, and I strongly suggest not visiting the site at least for the time being, until we know there aren't... hidden nasties on the site.
I'm sure things will be cleared up quickly though.

And don't criticize them.

That came from your first post to me, so yes, you did say I was critiszing them.

You'd think they would have changed hosts the last time, or atleast trie dto fix the bug O_o It happened like...5 months ago.

If you want me to get all technical, the reasons why I personally would say you are criticising is:
- "you'd think" implies you know better than we do
- "at least tried" implies that we have done nothing out of laziness or somesuch
- the timespan you quoted means that you cannot believe our sheer idiocy in doing nothing in that time
Here's some interesting information: we have no access to the phpBB to update it, considering the site owner is AWOL. I am the only forum admin apart from the site owner, and even I have no access to the phpBB files. Let me know when you work out how to hack forums to upgrade their phpBB versions, because it'd sure be helpful about now.

Oh, and you're preaching to the converted. If I had access to the phpBB files, then I would update the version. But I don't, so it's a moot point.

Heck, I'm a member of the neocolours forum. I didn't mean it anything like that, I meant, "Wow, I wonder why..."

Sun Mar 13, 2005 1:07 pm

Oh, I know you probably didn't mean to criticise us, it's just that the impossibility of the upgrade is kind of a sore spot with us...and understandably, seeing what's happened.

I don't espicially like not being included in that "us" as I AM a member of the neocolours board :P

Sun Mar 13, 2005 1:24 pm

Hee. By "us" I meant moderators and admins and things, people with the potential power to change the situation...or, at least, we would if we weren't all banned/deleted. Unless you're a hacker I wouldn't include you in the "us" :P

I said criticize. There is a MASSIVE difference between criticize and insult.

Insult wrote:To treat with gross insensitivity, insolence, or contemptuous rudeness. See Synonyms at offend.
To affront or demean: an absurd speech that insulted the intelligence of the audience.

criticize wrote:To find fault with: criticized the decision as unrealistic. See Usage Note at critique.
To judge the merits and faults of; analyze and evaluate.

And if you will note, I asked specifically for you to PM me about it. Which you did not do. If you further this conversation in this thread, after ignoring this third warning, you will not enjoy the consequences. You still have your PM privaledges, I suggest very strongly that you use them.
