If I really want to change my pet's gender, I usually go ahead and battle the Scientist. Might take a few tries before he switches you back, and a few lost fights, in my case, but it's safer than zapping any further, if you'd rather not risk a color/species change. And cheaper than the Strange Potion, too.

Thanks for the heads up on how to switch genders again, everyone who answered. I'm reloading the lab like CRAZY trying to get the mad scientist as a battledome opponent. :)
