Oh, it's possible alright. I'm trying to figure out how many squares are really possible. In theory, 4 should work. I just don't know if 8 would. Or maybe it's just the one square...

Well I have submitted my answer, and I am convinced it's a trick question. I have been messing around with circles and paint and a screenshot for hours.

Lenny Conundrum #173 problems

Original Lenny C question:
Suppose you have a Kacheekers board with tan and grey squares, each square measuring 5 cm by 5 cm.
What's the largest circle that can be drawn on the board such that the entire circumference of the circle is only touching grey?

Modified Lenny C question:
What's the radius of the largest circle that can be drawn on the board such that the entire circumference of the circle is only touching grey? Please round to the nearest hundredth of a centimeter

Bug Report I submitted:
Had already entered answer WHEN the Lenny C question was CHANGED.
Now I know as a setter of trivia/puzzle questions myself, it is easy to overlook that the question is NOT sufficiently clear as to the answer required, when first released.

However it is still frustrating for players to have it rewritten and NOT be able to resend the answer!

To prevent this happening AGAIN (this is not the first time) PLEASE have someone double check that the question is NOT ambiguous and has to be rewritten AFTER it was released. (Or alternately, scrub all answers submitted before the change and allow players to resend the correct answer)

I submitted the diameter of the circle, so I knew I was wrong, but I can't figure out how they got the right answer. I've drawn out a Kacheekers board (scale 1:10) and a circle with the "correct" radius, but I can't get the entire circumference to only touch gray. Here's some math I've calculated:

radius=r=7.91 cm (given answer)
diameter=d=15.82 cm
length of Kacheeker's square=s=5 cm (about 1/3 of d)
diagonal of Kacheeker's square=g=7.07 cm (about 1/2 of d)
length of one side of square circumscribed by circle=x=11.186 cm (slightly more than 2s)

To me, these numbers would imply that the correct solution encompasses approximately four Kacheekers squares. But I can't do that and make the circumference all gray. Did anyone get it right or figure it out with the answer?

Same here. I know my math is rusty, but I can't project a circle whose circumference only touches grey, even with the correct radius.

Take a gray square, the center of it is the center of the circle. From there, go down a square and a half and to the side half a square. You'll be at the intersection of 4 squares. So the radius of the circle is sqrt(2.5^2 + 7.5^2) and the circle touches the corners of the red squares.

Thanks, lemonberri. I felt like that should be possible, but I kept looking at 2x2 instead of 3x3. I was able to get this latest one correct because of your help -- over 2000NP. Thanks again.

Where will the Lenny Conundrum Lenny be going next week?

I've had several ideas, but nothing's panned out so far. I thought Conundrum #170 might hold the key ("put this together a few weeks ago"), but I can't see how it would. I've also tried subtracting the pairs and figuring out letters from the pairs -- nothing that makes sense yet. Anyone else have any ideas?

i tried doing all the adding and subtracting but the number doesnt tell me anything... and i havent done anything either with the 170 from the beggining...

Well, I've been lurking on the neoboards, and I suggested using LC 170 and using the numbers as coordinates to find letters, and someone neomailed me thanking me for the suggestion -- apparently he's going to be top 250, and I'm not going to get squat. But I hope that suggestion can help other people get it. (I had given up and submitted a guess by the time I got his neomail -- he actually gave me a puppyblew when he found out I got the wrong answer).

Not really -- it's not like the circles are lined up well. But I just had another person neomail me confirming that what I said was the key to him solving it... The first guy told me his answer, and I still can't see how he figured it out. Maybe if I printed it out and played with it by hand tomorrow morning (it's after midnight here -- I'm staying up a few more minutes to get more free training for my Tuskaninny). I'm pretty bad at these visual ones -- I couldn't solve the overlaid crystals puzzle, and I missed top 250 on LC 170 because it took me about 40 minutes to figure it out.

Even though I guessed wrong already, I still want to figure it out -- I'm a puzzles geek. I can say that if you choose to randomly guess, you'll almost definitely be wrong -- so give it time. 250's probably already out, so you've got a week, maybe two.

Someone on the neoboards just said that you can use MS Paint to help get the answer -- hope this helps.

A new Lenny Conundrum competition has begun. The answer to last week's was 9635 square millimetres. 907 people guessed the correct answer earning themselves 2206 NP each.

Well, guess that sorts us out.

I submitted 19635 at the last minute, literally. On the page where it says Thanks it also said the judging was over. But dang it, I forgot to subtract the 10,000 mm for the 4 squares.
