Yeah, although i've only played Neopets for a year i understand what you mean. Theres a psychological aspect too. "We" automagically creates a "me" or "us". It creates 2 groups with a "San Andreas" between 'em.
To keep TNT less arrogant and to show TNT how it could be different or how it used to be, Neopets could use some more competition. However that will all go automagically if/when people see a market in such, and if Neopets goes downwards, for example in the way described in this thread. Big companies often don't care much about losing a few customers. Those customers can program their own game, or join a competitor. Problem is when people are not open to such and stick to "the old" because they've been there for so long, nostalgic reasons, because they build up an empire/status there (e.g. items, NPs, trophies), and so on.
I was once on a symposium where health products were marketed from one corporation. When i suggested an alternative product to the person who invited me to the symposium, while that product was
clearly better, he replied: "but its not from [my corporation]". Sad, really. In the same sense Neopets has managed to get people coming back, addicted and/or interested. Screw that. Chess and scrabble are mind boggling games even though they're not Neopets games.
Like Google and Microsoft, to name 2 examples, i wish Neopets had better or more competitors.
