I had it back when it was $4 a month. 
I personally loved it, except I was frozen with no refund. And it was before all these new things were implemented.

well, I would definitely pay. I like the idea of supporting free sites. Besides, neopets is my favorite website on the web. If people in other online communities donate to get "special" items, why would neopets not be able to "sell" their services. Also, I like the portal idea, and all the features.
Alas, this may not become a reason for them to become a full pay-per-use site.
The only reason I dont pay premium is because I dont have a credit card, and my dad wouldnt pay for that. But if I was given a chance, Id be a premium user.

Not having ads alone is worth it. Plus, you sometimes get random events that give you a couple hundred NeoPoints and stuff.. as well as a Bri Codestone for signing up. Plus, beta testing games is fun.

I dont see any reason why I should feed Adam and Donna more money. As for the portal-i got to be a beta tester for free and thus still have it .(dont use it as much as I should). The boards are a good place to get frozen, and I use FF to block the adds, so I see no reason for me to accually join.

I believe in supporting sites that I visit a lot. I moderate three sites as a way to support them. I pay $20 a year for another site. But $100 is too much and more than I can afford. $20 I'd consider. But not more than that. And any site that has multiple big banners on it I have to assume is making plenty from having the banners, so the site doesn't need member money to make a profit. If the site also sells merchandise in stores- they don't need my money. So I visit neo without paying, they are profiting from my presence there increasing their numbers, especially the unnecessary extra page views they get when it takes multiple clicks to get to a game where one would do.
I'm glad someone explained what a portal was, I'd have been terribly disappointed if I had subscribed and found out that a portal is just what I already have in my favorites list.
