I play and my brother plays (occasionally), and my ex-fiance and her brother both had accounts as well, but it's hard to find people IRL who play outside of that - except at the game store I frequent. The owner is seriously addicted, but it helps that he can play at work and not get in trouble! :D

Marshmallow Sky wrote:Yeah. My whole family hates NeoPets. In fact, they all call it Neocrap. Same with runescape. And they call this site Pink Pony. I swear that they just hate me being on the computer (unless it's poker), but I still love the game. I can't wait for Krawk day to come around, because I have a Transmog potion for arthur_0_dent. He is gonna look wicked awesome!

Oh, and all my pets have last names. In fact, one of my pets only has a last name. Hmmm, never thought about that.

Be glad you don't have my dad. He'd probably love it if I gave up all forms of technology and became an amish person.

Urth, my dad would probably leap for joy if I did. He absolutely despises computers and doesn't understand much about them, but at least it's better than "parties", which are the big thing in my town. I swear that I am probably the only over 16 year old who plays in my whole town. But it is still fun.

It is quite difficult to explain, especially with officemates. Whenever they snoop around my workstation, they keep on asking why I am playing the site.

I just answer them I like playing the stock market. :P

 embarrased to say this but i'm 30 and love playing neo. I've been playing for 4 years now.

Eh, no problem. I had a chat with a bunch of adults on the chatboard last night. Well, they said they were adults, and seemed mature enough. Anyhow, there's a suprising amount out there.

Does anyone else get under the impression that when you walk down the street, that some of them have at one point played Neopets? Some are even addicted. In fact, for all you know, I could be that 14 year old kid down the street.

I mean, I've got one friend at school, and he's been playing for 2 years now. Probably more, but his accounts get frozen often. Anyway, when I get bored, I talk to him about the perfect battledome set, what we would do if we had 30mil, stuff like that which you only ever say when there is a serious lack of discussion :P My other friends though....

But I'm sure there are SOME people at school who play Neo and hide it. I mean, out of 448 other kids, there has to be someone who plays it.

Yay. my second problem.

Dad: What are you playing?
Me: neopets.
Dad: Is that a computer virus? I don't want you downloading any more crap onto our comp! This one sounds evil. Knee-o-pets.

:roflol: I dunno what's worse. Being computer-literate, and knowing whats out there, therefore making you over cautious at times; or being computer-illiterate, and thinking that every website other than eBay and Google is made purely to screw up your computer.

People just tell me the expect me to play games like this. When I was in school *Thinks back* ... *Yep, it was rubbish* people used to call me Mr gadget. I had all these japanese pet type toys. One I remember much later was a furry cat who came to me when I clapped. They were all in awe since they weren't available to them.

Also I used to get addicted to anything that involved raising some kind of monster. I used to keep a lot of real animals then too :D Allway imagined one of my pigeons becoming the ultimate pidge warrior with guns strapped to his wings!

People have said weird stuff regarding the site though like "Can you watch your pet eating some food?" o_O
I guess thats cause I showed them the virtual pikachu eating and brushing it's teeth :P

Even though my entire family plays, I wouldn't even think of telling my friends in real life--they would roll their eyes and think that I was even more of a nut than I am. However, I do think more than one of my daughter's friends have told their moms because I get really strange stares from some of the moms in this little community where everyone seems to know everyone else's business. Yet, it is perfectly OK (in their eyes) for them to watch Maury Povich and the insane soaps, go to the gambling casinos, shop at the mall for that "perfect" outfit, or play tennis at their country club for hours on end. They are just as addicted as me, just to different things.

I wish Neopets would market a T-shirt that says "Neopets. Give us 5 minutes. You'll be addicted for life."

I can think of a better quote (which applies to me):
"Neopets. You can walk away...but you'll be back for more >:]"

Sadly, the few people that I have told, have thought I was sad :/ My mum didn't approve at all and used to say "What use is that to you? You'll fail your exams but you can make a million fake points on some kids' website?". Grr.

My boyfriend accepts that I play but does tease me about it sometimes :/ today he sat behind me as I earned the Jhudora av and said in a really patronising voice "You are now eligible to use 'Evil Jhudora' as an avatar on the neoboards *snigger*". Wasn't very nice!

However - the other day I had neo up and a uni friend came in, and she said "oh! Neopets! I used to play that". Turned out she had a rubbish account and gave it up, but who cares, she played!! But she did say "If you tell anyone, I'll kill you", which exemplifies people's reaction to the site :(

I find it really hard to explain the site to people who've never encountered it. How do you explain that it's really nothing like what they're imagining, that it's nothing like pokemon, that the merchandise came AFTER the site itself and that for ages the site existed for totally uncommercial reasons, that it's so crazily complicated and diverse and full of hidden humour, that it has so much history, that i have a ridiculous amount of knowledge about it and a whole new vocabulary just for it.. that it's not as sad as people believe...

If i saw it now though, without having seen the site before, I think I'd think it was sad too. Hmm.

How do you explain guilds, for instance, to someone who has no knowledge of the site? It's an impossible concept to get across clearly.

Mari, are you back? Really back? Or just lurking on PPT? Because if you are really back, I have to, have to, have to give you back all of the nps you gave me when you left. Otherwise, it would not be fair, you know?

I'll confess that I used to kid my wife about being "Queen of the fifth-graders" when she talked about her success in aspects of the game, back before she and our daughter got me started.

Now, of course, I'm at least as addicted as they are. (Where's the wry emoticon when I need it?)
