OMG A NEW PRODUCE CHIA AVATAR RELEASED! *faints*

Wow, they just love their Produce Chias :P
I didn't even know it was released until I clicked on the page to see what the news was about the layout, hehe. And I just happened to be refreshing for the Battle Faerie avatar, and went away before it loaded. I was browsing, and got this avatar, and clicked back on the other page, and I had gotten the Battle Faerie one too! :) Great Thanksgiving so far!

Well, I'm not going to pretend I like this new banner... With my 800x600 monitor, it's bad enough playing Neoquest II as it is. It's also a big flash file to load, and it slows my computer down something rotten! I like the current layout better, it looks more... neopettish  The new layout (although I love the idea of having my username and NP at the top) is bad, and lacks lines if you know what I mean ;) I suppose if it's helping Neopets and TNT I should try be happy... Although I'd better get my Neoquest II game completed before the new banner is implemented as I can bearly see Rohane on the screen as it is :>

Thanks to Neopets Addict for the gorgeous set :)

... I'm upset and disappointed. Adam, you seem to have contradicted yourself. When the first new yellow bar was released, people asked if the top ad could be made smaller, and you stated that no, they couldn't, because "That's the standard size." If it's the standard size, why is it so easy to make it that much bigger? Can't we stick to the standard size?
I never once complained about the new sidebar, even with it's huge top ad, and more scrolling for me. I liked it. I thought it was lovely and shiny. I LOVE it. But this new thing... is hideous. It looks entirely unfinished. It looks so thrown together. Does the ad really need to be that huge? Can't we stick with the sidebar we have now, with the standard sized ad?
This new one seems to benefit those that can block it. They block it, and the rest of it scrolls up, flush with the top of the screen, and it's like it was never there in the first place, reducing the amount of scrolling time. Well, that's how it's supposed to be anyway. Unlike the current standard sized one, that when blocked, simply becomes a black line, and the rest of the top bar stays the same size. You don't have to see it, but you still have to scroll.
Is there anyway to block ads in IE? If so, someone point me in the right direction. I don't want to have to block the ads, and if the bar stayed the way it is now, I wouldn't have to. But the new one is awful looking.
So thus, I go back to my original question, and hope it's answered, is it really necessary to make the ads so much larger? Is there anyway that we can just stick with what we have now?

There are programs that will block banner ads in IE.

I can't think of a good one off the top of my head, but I'll look into it.

One thing about firefox.....with the special sidebars, firefox throws a fit and will shut down...I don't know how commen this is, but I reinstalled firefox last time it happened, and was SOL...so you may have to use IE on the days that the special sidebars are around.

All I'm going to do about it is if the banners get too annoying then I'll write to the advertisers that I will no longer buy their product due to annoying large advertisements, I can see them just as well at half the size.

Ya, Uhuh, ok. What did you just say?

You know....if the banner ads "aren't working" (as mentioned in the explination) because nobody is clicking them, just tell me...eh?

I'd spend a good minute or two a day haplessly clicking sponsor links if neo came out and said "we need the help" over messing with the banners more. I spend more time doing just that to get a useless omelette, and a jelly a day....

I'd do it.

Really, I would.

I'd click on sponsors for a few minutes every day if it ment keeping the site free and not having to resort to huge, troublesome, slow-loading banners.

But thanks TNT for coming up-and-honest with us. It's nice to hear the truth behind a matter like this instead of "SLOTH zapped his ray gun and made the banners bigger!". I prefer the honest approach and the rational talking to the players. I give you all a big bravo on that.

Well, with the firefox blocker, the banner is still loading, you just don't see it ;).

When I was trying to figure out why there was a blank space I noticed it still linked back to the sponsor ad.

The blank space is caused by an IFrame. So...disable that particular IFrame...I wouldn't recomend disabling all IFrames...because that may disrupt other browsing around the 'net.

How do I get the firefox blocker?

I was looking at the mock-up again today ... of course I don't like it - it'll slow my dial up down even more, I don't like the user stuff at the top either. Totally inconvenient and forces you to look at the banner ad - not a good thing for a physically challenged/disabled person.

But in looking at it and the fact that it seems "unfinished" - something that's been mentioned many times. Then going around the internet a bit ... I've yet to see this larger banner anywhere. Are we 100% sure that there in fact IS going to be this new huger (I know that's not a word) banner? Or could this be "payment" for releasing the bleh avatar ... just a thought ;)

I've kind of been wondering that, too. The page says this is the new "industry standard," but I haven't seen any banners that size on any other sites I visit, and it would be weird for them to change things so soon after they updated the sidebar to include normal-sized banners. It does also look very unfinished. I hope it's a joke! Maybe TNT got confused and thought it was April Fool's Day already. ;)

(Although wouldn't it be harmful for them to post something like that as a joke? What if their advertisers took it seriously? Also, one of the huge banners I saw on the sample page was for an offsite company -- would they be in on a joke?)

I've seen plenty of sites with those size banners. Cnn.com for one, boston.com/sports/redsox for two (although boston.com doesn't appear to have ads on their page today).

Another one: http://www.mtv.com/news/

Actually, now that you guys mention it, I did a search online for "industry standard" of banner size. :) Just for fun mind you....

Seems every place I come up with "industry standard"= 468x60 pixels.

Do it yourselves. :)

BTW:

The new one on Neo is *gasp* 728x90.

This REALLY annoys me. Why? Not because of the NP, Pet, and User at the top, but of the length of the banner. It's just long enough to make that(To me) annoying horizontal side-bar. If the smaller Ads wern't working, these won't either. It's only making more and more people blocking them. Go back to the immersive advertising.

I like the fact, however, that Neopets is being the most up-front they have been in a while. Usually they say "Boochi's ray gun's gone haywire and made the banners larger!" or "Oh no! Sloth's used his invasion tax to change the size of the banners!", ect. They've told us why they've changed it, and that makes me happy.

Those who...Um...I don't know. Now... I've got nothing else to say.
