So, I was reading the NeoBoards last night, and one topic was interesting. Some guy was saying that Neopets was ust a ripoff because they were just taking real life pets and giving them unusual names. So, I got to thinking, "Hey, why not make a post here, and let everyone post their ideas and thoughts on what real animal is a Neopet!" So, just copy and paste the list and fill it in and give comments on what you think too.

To me, Acaras have always been the most cat-like Neopets. Aishas are, I suppose, but I've always thought Acaras were more so.

And I've always thought Poogles were more a pig/dog hybrid.

Buzz- dragonfly? Just a general insect, I suppose.

Usul- squirrel or some other tree-dwelling rodent, without a doubt. Just cuteified times a billion. :/

Aisha - looks a bit like a cat to me
Meerca - gerbil
Xweetox - chipmunk, methinks
Blumaroo - bit like a kangaroo
Buzz - various bugs
Ruki - locust?
Lutari - got to be an otter- lutra is the Latin for otter

I think the Ruki is like a praying mantis, hehe.
Blumaroo looks like a cross between a kangaroo and an anteater or something...

Chias are bean bags
JubJubs are Pompoms
Kikos are Bath buddies

I think all the pets apart from the Chia, Grundo (alien), Kiko and Jubjub can be compared to an animal or two fairly accurately. After all there is only so far your imagination can run if you stick to them all having two eyes, a mouth and a nose complete with a normal amount of legs!

Wockies are definitely the most cat like for me =)

Jubjub= a duck, whithout a beak

chia= definitly to happy to be allowed

kacheek= I've always tought of them as a kind of weird squirel

kyrii= a kind of desert dog (I dont remember the name of those cute canines with big ears) that had learn to walk on 2 legs

zafara= kangoroo with rabbit head

ixi= a GOAT!!! I LOVE GOATS!!!!!

ruki= a mix between an ant and a religious mant

ogrin= I'm not sure, but there's again something goatlike in the eyes...

This is how I've taken things in in the past years. I think you will find them pretty logical.

In alphebetical order:

Acara - ORIGINAL SPECIE. Made to be a creative sea-dwelling creature.
Aisha - ORIGINAL SPECIE. Only called a cat by many because its the closest thing we have to a cat.
Blumaroo - Kangaroo. It's been cartoonized to become an original species.
Bori - Typical Armadillo.
Bruce - Typical Penguin.
Buzz - Dragonfly/ Bug Resemblance.
Chia - ORIGINAL SPECIE. Meant to be the "So basic and plain that its adorable!" specie.
Chomby - Long-Necked Dinosaur...like a Brontosaurus.
Cybunny - Bunny Rabbit
Draik - Long-Style Dragon
Elephante - Elephant
Eyrie - Gryphin
Flotsam- - Dolphin.
Gelert - Puppy Dog
Gnorbu - Llama.
Grarrl - Two-legged Carnivore Dinosaur, like a T-Rex.Green, blob eyes, antannea.
Hissi - Snake. Simply given wings to make it original.
Ixi - Goat.
Jetsam - Shark
Jubjub - ORIGINAL SPECIE. Meant to be the cute fuzzy ball everyone loves.
Kacheek - ORIGINAL SPECIE. Very simple, meant to be cute, animal charactoristics.
Kau- Cow
Kiko - ORIGINAL SPECIE. Supposed to be a floaty-looking water dweller.
Koi - Fish
Korbat - Bat
Kougra - Tiger
Krawk - Crocodile/Alligator
Kyrii- ORIGINAL SPECIE. Attempt at a creative specie with many different animal charactoristics.
Lenny - Long-Legged Bird / Storklike.
Lupe - Wild Dog. Wolf-like.
Lutari - Otter.
Meerca - Mouse. Obviously made round with a long tail to add creativity to a specie.
Moehog - Pig Neopet. Given Tusks for originallity, so it resembles hogs.
Mynci - Monkey.
Nimmo - Basic Frog.
Ogrin - ORIGINAL SPECIE. It resembles a few animals because its got 50 different animal parts in one pet to make it original.
Peophin - ORIGINAL SPECIE. Girlish Sea-Dweller. Pun off of a "seahorse"
Poogle - ORIGINAL SPECIE.. rather dog-like, but designed to be original.
Pteri - Typical Wild Bird.
Quiggle - ORIGINAL SPECIE. It IS VERY froglike, but lacks legs, hunch, etc. It just had a toungue and eyes on top of head, which are frog-like charactoristics. Its froglike, but meant to be original.
Ruki- Ant/Insect
Scorchio - Two Legged Dragon.
Shoyru - Anime-Adorable Dragon.
Skeith- ORIGINAL SPECIES. Dragonlike, but meant to be a big Brute specie.
Techo- Typical Lizard/Gecko
Tonu - ORIGINAL SPECIES. Prehistoric Rhino-like animal, given many charactoristics, to fill in that "triceratops" gap in Dinosaur land.
Tuskaninny - Seal
Uni - Unicorn
Usul - Squirrel
Wocky - ORIGIANAL SPECIE. Charactoristics given to be different, just turned out very catlike and foxlike.
Xweetok - Chipmunk/Mouse. Fights could continue forever to which it really is. Its a cute tree-dweller given charactoristics of both for creativity.
Yurble - Bear. Originally intended to be a bear neopet, just given very unique features to make it an original neopet creature.
Zafara - ORIGINAL SPECIE. Has many different parts to it, so it could resemble multiple things.

So yes, many are based upon real animal species, and given silly charactoristics to make them original. In my opinion, from this list, only 15 neopets were created solely to be a NEOPET specie, unlike any animal.

Well if they were all new species created specifcally for neopets, it would be way too weird. i remember when i first started there are all these really odd things like the tatsu and fuzio and such. if they all stayed like that, it would be way too odd and neopets wuld lose its appeal. the pets are unique so they're not completely boring, but they bear resemblance to real creatures so the the target audience isn't completely put off by the weirdness.

Jubjub - Hedgehog (when they're curled up in a ball, but without the big feet XD)
Grarrl - T Rex
Skeith - Lizard/dragon hybrid
Korbat - Um...let me get back to that one...XD BAT
Lenny - Heron/crane/egret...basically any bird with a long neck and long legs
Wocky - Long haired cat
Bruce - Penguin
Kau - Um...cow...? Maybe...? XD

I admit that most of the pets are close to real animals, not just pets, but here are my interpretations on them:

Acara - Kind of cat-like with horns. And can breathe underwater
Aisha - Sort of a siamese cat with giant antenna-like ears.
Blumaroo - Kangaroo with a spring tail (See the name)
Bori - Armadillo, hands down
Bruce - Penguin with a bow
Buzz - I guess a dragonfly.
Chia - Now this is a lump of clay that mutated. Definitely a unique species.
Chomby - Brontosaurus/braciasaurus
Cybunny - Rabbit with a fluffy crest
Draik - thin Chinese-like dragon
Elephante - Elephant (Duh!) with wings WAY too small
Eyrie - Gryphon
Flotsam - Whale
Gelert - Dog
Gnorbu - Llama
Grarrl - Definitely a T-Rex.
Grundo - Generic yet cute "little green men"
Hissi - Winged snake. Reminds me of something mythological...
Ixi - I personally see them as a deer.
Jetsam - Shark
Jubjub - A fuzzball with feet
Kacheek - Some kind of rodent. Sort of a typical cartoon animal that gets stomped on
Kau- Cow (Duh!)
Kiko - A bouncyball with claws and a bandage
Koi - Fish, most recently a koi
Korbat - Bat (again, duh)
Kougra - Tiger
Krawk - Crocodile (Get it? Croc, Krawk?)
Kyrii- Weasels on two legs
Lenny - Definitely flamingo-like. Possibly relative of Daffy Duck?
Lupe - Wolf, no question. (Name comes from latin/french, meaning wolf)
Lutari - Otter
Meerca - It's a ball with a limb and a giant tail! Almost mouse-like
Moehog - Pig/boar, with a mohawk
Mynci - Monkey
Nimmo - Long-limbed Frog.
Ogrin - I'm staring at it, and it's some kind of African creature. Maybe a coloured zebra, but it's a stretch for that
Peophin - seahorse meets land horse
Poogle - Sort of a pig-like dog? Dunno. Seems unique.
Pteri - Small birds, like a robin or a sparrow
Quiggle - Frog/toad, squashed
Ruki- ant crossed with a praying mantis
Scorchio - British-style dragon
Shoyru - Another dragon, but fan-based. (And they say meepits are evil! *shivers*)
Skeith- Stegosaurus-like beast. Similar to other fat lizards
Techo- Lizard, maybe a salamander
Tonu - Reminds me of a rhinoceros
Tuskaninny - Seal
Uni - Unicorn
Usul - Cartoony Squirrel
Wocky - Cartoony cat
Xweetok - Chipmunk/realistic squirrel
Yurble - Bear? Can't think of something better here, especially with the curly ear-thingies
Zafara - Originally, I thought it was unique, but the legs really reminds me of a squirrel's with floppy ears, spiky spine and a lizard's tail

So yes, many parodies on pet animals, but many are also unique creatures or untamable beasts. So I see no problem with these being "ripped off" real creatures.

Kind of a stretch of imagination, but the Ogrin could possibly be a zebra. If you squint your eyes, stepped back a little, and smeared apple sauce on your computer screen...
