I logged onto MSN just now and I realised there was a Lost Password email there waiting for me. I read it and it said this:

Dear Liamah Buro,

Your login information is as follows :

Our Site : http://www.neopets.com
Username : winter_halo
Password : **********

The password freaked me out. It consisted of the names of three of my former school friends! I checked the user name and it had not been active for at least a year, probably more. You can tell when an account hasn't been logged into because it comes up blank where the 'last logged in' info should be. So how did it wind up in my emails?

Most likely somebody has a username close to yours and mispelled. They couldn't log in becuase of thier typing error and then hit the lost password button. They were probably steamed when Neopets did not send them thier password and that they couldn't log in to thier account. It happens a LOT.

Nobody but you was able to get the password in your e-mail, so it's ok.

But the account hadn't been logged into for well over a year o_0 And the password consisted of the names of my three best friends. It just doesn't sound like a coicidence to me...

Ginger, I'm a little confused. Is this not your account info? If not, maybe the person mistyped their e-mail address and entered yours instead (or they might have had your e-mail address, not checked it either, then you got it when it freed up). Are you sure this isn't some side account you set up and forgot about (or maybe one of your friends made for you)? Then stampsyne's comment about someone entering your username by mistake makes sense. Either way, with all the cookie-grabbing on, I'd probably change both my neopets and e-mail passwords.

I'm assuming, by your surprise at both the password and fact it was sent to you, that it isn't your account.

I obviously don't know what your friends names are, but if they're common it wouldn't be so much a coincidence. I'm sure you know lots of people, so it could just be coincidence that it was three names of people you knew.
How long have you had your email address for? I know hotmail deletes emails, sometimes. If your email addy isn't filled with numbers or anything, it's always possible that someone previously had your email address, made a neo account and then stopped using both (like Siniri suggested). Now either that person forgot they used that email address for that account (believe me, it happens) and tried to come back, or someone else mistyped their name.

I wouldn't get too panicked over it (unless your friends have very uncommon names), but definitely change your neo passwords for protection. If you're that worried, change your MSN password, too.

They have uncommon names. One of my friend's names is Greek and the other one is called Sheryl. We used to call Sheryl by a shortened name and that was the name that was used in the password. It's no coincidence. I'm wondering if we perhaps created an account a long time ago and I just forgot about it. I probably forgot that they used my email address or something.
