In 1 player, is there any way to keep the stolen item after the battle?

No. I think the item is always returned to its original owner.

Darn. Some of the opponents have really useful items to steal, such as the H4000 
But if you can't keep the weapon, what's the use of a stealing item?

You can use it during the battle. And your opponent can't
