Neopian Deflation

Sun Nov 07, 2004 1:45 am

how does a RETIRED item that was selling for 950k last week drop all the way to 30k right now, this is the kind of thing on neo that makes me very angry, ohh those darn spindly mushrooms, i bougt them for 500k :'( i hate people who do that, I COULD HAVE HAD A LIGHT FAERIE TABLE

I have received requests to reopen this thread to discuss the deflation in Neopia. Although the original poster does seem to be complaining, they do have a good point and it's an issue that has been a problem for a while.

I have had a huge problem with deflation in the Food Shop. I have restocked there for years and the prices were pretty steady, but ever since this last summer, the prices have been plummeting. Items have dropped hundreds of neopoints in the space of a week and they just seem to continue to drop. Unless it's Half Price Day or you are grabbing rares, it's getting really tough to make a profit there anymore.

Has anyone noticed a deflation in the paint brush prices after Jacko went temporarily insane the other day? I haven't, but I don't watch pb prices closely.

Johnny, I haven't actively looked, but quite a few people are saying that certain pb have gone down in price. I just wish I'd bought a couple extra glowing and speckled pbs when I bought those for 2 of my pets. I can't believe speckled is UB! Insane!

The whole inflation/deflation thing mystifies me. Food is a good example. For the most part, it is very hard to make a profit on it, unless you were lucky enough to hoard something like bread - and even when something retires it doesn't mean that the price will necessarily rise. Look at 99% of the advent items from years past. The prices are usually very high for a few days after that item's given out, then drops like a stone and pretty much stays there.

Furniture obviously starts high when released, then usually drops but stabilizes (IMO) to a decent average price. Books? Right now most are kind of high, I have no idea why. Weapons - depends on whether there's a war. Best time to buy seems right after one's ended, people want to sell off what they have quickly.

I can't rs - dial up and general lack of what's a good deal and what isn't (along with half price day being a nightmare for me to just navigate the site with the extra traffic), so I just hope to stumble onto a few good deals in other user shops.

I think Plushie Paint Brushes went down like 300k-500k when jacko went insane :o

I have noticed that certain thins are deflating aswell. Things that used to be around ten thou are down to about 1K, like cheery tomatoes.

I haven't really noticed any crazy pb reductions though.

I think Neopets has done an AWESOME thing by making Jacko go crazy. For a week or so, average Neopians will be able to buy a paint brush without selling everything they have! Why are we complaining about deflators? INFLATORS are the problem. Orange paintbrushes are ridiculous, and I'd hate to want to buy a Grey one. Everyone should be nicer to deflators, they're a dying breed.

I do a lot of shopping on Neo--that is basically how I make my nps--by reselling items. I also buy plushies for my plushie gallery--many of which are unbuyable. And, by doing so, I have learned a little bit about deflation--at least when it applies to high rarity items.

My observation is that Neo tends to release a high rarity item in batches. It appears that instead of releasing just one of a high rarity item on a periodic basis, Neo will release a number of them on the same day and then not release any more for awhile after that. So, instead of Neo releasing one ITEM X every 3 days, it releases 10 of ITEM X on the same day and then no more for another 30 days. And, by doing so, this causes the price to deflate--at least, to temporarily deflate.

For example, I will be looking for a faerie lupe plushie, which is rarity 98, and there will be none on the TP/auctions/shop or maybe one selling for 2 million. Then at some point in time later, there will be ten or twelve on the TP/auctions. And some people are so desperate for the neopoints and want the nps fast, so they underprice the plushie--and I am then able to pick one up for 350K. And, then, as the underpriced plushies get bought up little by little, the price will eventually go back up to 2 million.

I suspect this is what happened in your case.

My guess is that a bunch of these mushrooms were released by Neopets recently--even though they are retired. Neo does release retired items--just look at the icy negg. It is retired, yet you can still stumble over one in Terror Mountain from time to time.

Is it possible that this particular mushroom was a prize for a certain weekly game?--like mystery pic, better than you, or lenny conundrum. Or found their way into the Halloween goodie bags. That would explain why there are so many out there right now--when they were unbuyable just last week.

If that is the case--that a bunch were released recently--and if my theory of the batch releases is correct, then sooner or later, the price will rise again. Maybe not back up to the 950K mark--because there are more of them out there than before this new release--but definitely to an unbuyable price.

I suggest that you hold onto the mushrooms you bought and wait to see if the price rises again.

I suggest that you might want to buy more.

In conjuction to those of you working in the Food Shop, I think I know what's been happening. I used to restock in the Snow Foods Shop, but it's next to impossible to make money there anymore, and when you can it's only maybe 30NP per item.

The major problem that I've encountered is that people buy up large numbers of one item, say, a Tigersquash Chia Pop, and put them ALL into their shop. Then, the only way someone else can sell off their goods is to bend even lower. If this second person is also flooding the market, the price could stay deflated as long as a few days. The problem is that many more than two people do this, so the ShopWizard is constantly being flooded with items.

It's incredibly easy to find TS Chia Pops selling for 100NPs, when they sell in the Snow Food Shop for over 600.

This is all in my experience, of course.

I have already done that with some of the spooky food that was in the Halloween goodie bags. Korbat ice lollies were 20K the day before the goodie bags came out and then dropped to 300 nps. So, I have a few patiently waiting in my SDB.

You mean it's over?? ARGH.

Also, is there like a list of all the Spooky stuff that deflated insanely due to the Goodie Bags? I mostly care about the Spooky food, for obvious hoarding reasons, and Spooky furniture, because I'm thinking of filling an entire room with Meepit lamps and the like. :D

Just today, the Devilpuss went from rarity 97 to 70. Expect a major price drop soon within a few days..

Well I'm not sure if it's over, but many resellers are predicting within a week or so. I still stand by what I said, it's inflators that are the problem.
