You used to be able to a long time ago, I have no idea how but you could, unfortunately there is no way to put a space in it anymore, just an underscore (_).

I believe it was because the database back then was different copmpared to what Neo runs currently.

Wasn't that something to do with the grundo adoption agency? I have a friend who got a grundo that had spaces in his name :/ he's now a darigan ixi though XD

Grundos can still be named things with spaces and puncutation signs, I believe. But that's exclusive to the Grundo species.

hmm can you do it with krawks? the petpets, and you name them with a space, and then feed them fungus?

Can you do that, then morph your pet?

I tried a few months ago... But it didn't work. Although I do think the space only worked with grundos, and anyone who doesn't have a grundo but has a space in the name must have labbed or morphed the pet.

Yep, people created pets from the Grundo adoption thingy with spaces and punctuation in their names - there's a pet called . for instance, and one called Full Moon.
I don't see why, since these pets don't seem to mess up the database in any way, they dont let us do that now?
Those were the days :/

It's not so much the database, as the expected value range for the field. By restricting you to [a-Z0-9_], they're making sure that you can't "sneak" stuff into your petname that would cause scripts to break on you (generally a nice idea). It's weird that they don't use the same checking technique on both the "create a pet" page and multiple other places where you can create one (although explainable for krawks, if petpets originally weren't meant to be pets).

Another reason why spaces arn't a good thing though: Regardless of whether or not they affect the database, people could take the user name of a respectible citizen(Example: Good Guys Rock) And put an extra space somewher(so: Good Guys Rock) theres an extra space between good and guys. see the problem? A scammer could take such a username, and pretend to be the good guy. :/
Though the same sort of thing can happen with underscores(Good_Guys_Rock and Good__Guys_rock) If your paying attention you can see the differance, while an extra space might be missed.
Edit: It won't LET me put the extra space in, drat it all! >_<
