Lenny Conundrum #81

Fri Aug 27, 2004 3:27 am

Terry the Pteri just got back from an exhausting, 3-week vacation overseas. Exhausting because he had to use his own wingpower the entire way!

On his trip, he flew to the westernmost point on Terror Mountain, then to the southernmost point on Krawk Island, before returning to his home on the westernmost point of Tyrannia.

How many total miles did he fly on his trip? Please round to the nearest mile

heh..as the prize was unattractive, i was pretty careless about finding my answer. i just use my finger to estimate the distance from tyrannia to terror mtns to krawk island and then back to tyrannia

Same here. But i did use a ruler. :P It looks pretty easy, but, knowing them, it'll be twisted somehow.

yeah there are 2 traps here..first is that the scale on the map is 2 cm, so remember to multiply by 2..another trap is that some players would probably omit the initial trip from his home to terror mtns

Also, the westernmost point of Tyrannia... it looks like that's the bit you can kind of see through the word "Meridell." It's farther west than the visible part up top.

ok - here's my logic

the 2 cm mark on the map scale = 2.3 cm on my ruler
i marked the spots on my computer screen to help with accuracy LOL (yes i got the bit under the meridell word)
and yes i included the first bit of the trip - the trip forms a triange

then just did a ratio equation

edit: opps - i forgot an important piece of info LOL
the total trip was 23.6 cm on my ruler

he starts at the westernmost part of tyrannia right? if so, then my answer is under 2000 miles... im probably wrong

and what an interesting name... terry the pteri

I dont know, it seemed way too simple to me. I copied the world to my paint, and drew a triangle from each point. and the measurement scale on the world was equal to 1 inch on my ruler. (every 1/2 in being 100 miles).. so from point A (west tyrannia) to point B (West Terror) was 2 inches (ie:400miles) then from point B to point C(south Krawk) was 4 1/2 inches(ie:900miles) then from point C back to point A was 3 1/2 inches (ie:700miles) so 400+900+700=2000miles.. maybe im wrong, but it was way too easy

Hmm...something I'm thinking here- since I'm assuming Neopia's a spherical planet, wouldn't there be some sort of extra work (about distances around circles) involved to calculate this? If you were measuring in straight lines from each defined point, you'd basically be making the Pteri travel underground.

Also, since Terry's flying, he'd be travelling in some sort of arc, and not on the ground, thus adding more distance. I'd doubt they'd incorporate this into it though...they don't specify elevation.

Or maybe I'm just overanalysing stupidly here, cause I wouldn't be able to solve it like this anyway. :P

Ack! *kicks self* I thought I had this one for sure, but did I look at the scale? Nooo... argh. Oh well.

But hmm, Yoshi brings up a good point. I wouldn't think that elevation would be counted in to it, we don't know how high he was flying. :/

What I did, which is the most accurate method, is to create the triangle above, but I recorded the length of each line, how far over and up/down it went. Then squaring both and taking the square root to get the length in pixels. According to the map scale, 1 cm = 31 pixels.

Take the number of pixels in the lines combined, and some multiplication, and you'll have your answer. That's of course assuming that the this is Euclidian (linear/planar) Geometry or whatever. :)

Even then there is room for debate. There are two westernmost pixels on Terror Mountain, and two southernmost pixels on Krawk Island... o_O

And believe me, just one pixel makes a difference of a bit more than 3 miles...
