TNT has gone overboard

Mon Aug 09, 2004 2:05 am

They just sent me a warning for profanity. The only thing I can think of is when I said the word, "Damn" on a board. About five people freaked out and said they would report me. Now tell me, if "Damn" was that bad a word, wouldn't it of been blocked by the filters?

Mon Aug 09, 2004 2:11 am

And wouldn't it also not be in Neoquest II? :)

And apparently, it's not blocked on PPT either.

I think that word is one of those words in the "gray area" it's not openly banned, but it's not encouraged?

Mon Aug 09, 2004 2:28 am

Eh, some people consider it a bad word, some don't. Sometimes it depends on how it's used, and sometimes it's, err... not? *tries to sound intelligent*

I've seen people say Hell on the boards numerous times, and they weren't frozen or warned (as far as I know).

You hit the nail on the head right there. TNT warned you, not because you said a "bad" word, but because people reported you--even if those people were incorrect in doing so.

Why do I know this to be true? Because, after my daughter's account was frozen due to a false reporting from a chatster, I got an email from the TNT that basically confirmed my theory. The email said that because there are so many posts and so few staffers to read them, that the staff has to rely on the reports of the users in order to enforce Neopets's rules--even if those people who are reporting do not know the rules--and, even more troubling, even if the staff person doesn't actually check the post to see what was written. So, basically, that means that if one person writes say "Damn" over and over until their fingers get tired and if no one bothers to report him, his account isn't in jeopardy. But, if another person writes "Damn" once and some jerk doesn't like it and reports him for doing so, that person gets a warning, if he is lucky, or frozen, if he isn't so lucky. Talk about an arbitrary rule-system!!!!

My advice: Do not post on the chats--ever. And, if you absolutely must venture forth, pretend that you are talking to your 95 year old great grandmother when you do post. You probably wouldn't say "Damn" to her, right?

I've said 'damn' a ton of times on the neoboards without any problems. I hate it how neo is selective of who it warns/punishes for breaking these ridiculous rules :(

I've said damn and hell and various other swear words (with some letters replaced by symbols ) over Neomail and was never warned once.

Guess I'm just lucky.

Yup. Its a bad word to me. (Unless it is used for a different reason than cursing..even then I'm iffy about it)

id be saying some rather nastier words myself, but i digress.
NEVER post on the chat boards, and be careful with guild ones aswell.

"those damn dark faeries!"

Heh I remember that in Neoquest, I was a little surprised they actually used it...but the word "damn" isn't too bad, I would avoid using it on Neopets though for such reasons as being reported and whatnot.

I'd suggest listening to Setekh.

A simple innocent typo... an annoyed neopet user... or a casual word you don't think could be THAT bad... can cause you to lose your account. The best way to avoid these? Stay away from the boards.

If you stay away from the boards... you avoid a large area where you could get frozen! That's the way to go ;)

Well Hell is just a place.

I consider damn to be a bad word, but just barely. I wouldn't never ever report someone for saying it though. It's like saying "curses" or "dang." It's just a word that doesn't really mean anything (well I guess curses could mean something, but it's always fun to act like Mojo Jojo).

Well, then the person you're talking to isn't nearly as likely to report you than some random person on the Neoboards. I still wouldn't use that sort of language though.

I actually didn't notice 'damn' in NQ2, and I recently talked to that NPC. It's probably because I don't consider that a swear word, though I do know when it's a bad idea to say it.
