New Maps?

Sat Mar 28, 2009 1:54 pm

I haven't been playing Neopets as much lately since I now work non-stop to avoid getting a pink slip... but when did TNT install new land maps into the game? This morning I visited Terror Mountain to see the Snowager instead of using a link on my dailies page. The new map is really pretty - and some areas have moved (the Scratch Card Kiosk is now outside in town rather than in the ice caves).

Did I miss a thread about this update? A blurb in the news?

I dislike the new map :( I've never liked flashy images or anything, and it's much harder to navigate

Blech. I dislike the new maps as well.

It's only mildly amusing that the link inside the scratchcard kiosk takes you back to the ice caves instead of outside the kiosk which is now in happy valley.

...and the kiosk doesn't really look much like a kiosk, either.

Being a creature of habit, I always find it hard to navigate new pages. I think the style they are using is too busy. Too much stuff distracting from the shop/game signs. They did the same thing with Haunted woods and then the space station a long while back.

Just my opinion.. the newer mod looks don't have the same cozy feel that neopets used to have. I kind of liked the old-fashioned cartoon style over the uber-digital style. Some updates are okay, but I generally cringe with the new stuff.

But - then again - I'm just an older fuddy-duddy, so what do I know, eh?

I'm with you there. I've always been very anti-flash-map as it is, and really just because you can do something in flash doesn't mean it's going to be a good idea. All the animations and stuff are rather annoying, though without them I can see the art being alright...

I like how they added the new games to the maps. Makes it feel a little more connected in that sense. But other than that, I don't like them. All these mandatory flash maps are making the Flash Map/Image Map setting pretty useless.

I don't like the new style. My browser has a bad version of Flash so flashy pages; I can't use them properly.

There is an option in your preferences that let you turn off the flash maps so it loads images only.

I agree that the maps do look a little busy however. I don't mind so much what type of art Neopets uses... just so long as it is consistent across the entire website.

Except that the latest map redraws completely omit a image version. My setting's been on image map since I started playing, and slowly the worlds keep getting replaced with flash only, which kinda sucks...lol

My settings have been set to HTML Maps rather than Flash Maps for years after I had some problems with Flash Maps loading on Dial-Up... and now I've got the same problems. Despite having Broadband (admittedly it's not very fast but Games tend to load pretty quickly), it still takes a while for the Maps to load... and, for some reason on Happy Valley, the only way I can get the Maps to show up is by rolling my Cursor over the area. Unless it's a coincidence that it pops up at that time, I don't visit the Terror Mountain area as much as I used to. :P

I like the new Flash Maps in the way that they make a Place actually feel real, all of the little details and suchlike... but I'm not a fan of the dimensions. Maybe its because I'm used to the almost square maps but it just seems too big. All of the detail is a good thing... but it also makes everything seem a bit chunky too. I don't know... maybe I'm more set in my ways than I'd like to admit.
