I can't solve it.

Fri Apr 18, 2008 4:13 pm

I want to get one of my neofriends to join PPT but I don't know how. I asked on the HC and they said that mentioning any outside websites, even in neomails, can get me into trouble. So do any of you know a way to get my neofriend to join PPT without getting me into trouble?

I believe you can mention it without linking them to it.

If you want to be really vague, and I'm borrowing from the LiveJournal support staff handbook, you can tell them something along the lines of..

"There's a site I think you'd be interested in. As it's offsite I can't link you to it, but if you use your favourite internet search engine to search for 'pinkpt', you'll likely find the site I'm referring to."

'Referring' to them (as in linking and stuff) is not allowed, chatting about it should be no problem. TNT also won't be able to know that you're mentioning a site if it's not a link, unless the receiver of the neomail reports you for spamming and such. If you just mention the name of the site, it's no biggie. I mean, even the word 'neomail' has over 400k hits..

What Kenjiro and Alex said is basically right, but make sure you mention it in neomail - one of my friends got a warning because he runs a neo-related podcast, and someone that listened to the podcast started talking about it on the boards. TNT thought he'd hired someone to advertise the podcast :/ Just keep it on the low, is all I'm saying.

OK, I am still thinking that it is too risky. Do you think sending a suggestion to TNT work? I say that they can consider allowing people to link/mention certain neo help sites, like PPT, because they are proven not to contain material that TNT finds unsuitable.

My off hand guess is that TNT will say "NO" to linking to any site. Reason being: if they allow *some* off-site links to be posted, they're opening themselves up for a huge gray area. While I would love to be able to link to PPT on neo, I doubt it will ever happen.
I'd still wager to guess that they'd say "NO" if asked about mentioning/chatting about neo helps sites, but as mentioned by previous posts, if you're talking to one person about it via neomail, and don't provide a direct link...unless the person reports you, you're not likely to get into trouble. I had a friend provide me with her email address via neomail (with spaces, etc), and neither of us got into trouble over it.

You can talk about outside sites ( with great care and with provisos by TNT) but not link to them.

There are plenty of examples on the boards especially during plots. People will often say go to Jellyneo, Neoitems, PPT, etc. TNT have mentioned it in the Editorial before - links are not allowed but certain well-known sites are given allowances, as long as they are not abused.

I often post in my guild about things I have read here on on other Neo sites.

Heya TNT! So I put up a thing that says to get graphics, go to my site at whatever site it was. A few hours later I got a warning from you guys telling me to take it down or something, so I took it down. Then I clicked on someone else's Petpage (we'll call her Bob) and they had the same thing! Only it was to her site, and she hasn't been taken down! Why should I have to take it down if they don't? Personally I don't think that is very fair. My site is a Neopets fan site, so like you have said before, we can put the link with spaces in and such. Although mine was a freewebs one. Are those not allowed, too? Thanks TNT and please remove my username. ~[removed]
First of all, NO outside links are allowed, period. We only stated that we sometimes let links on ULs/Petpages/Etc slide when they are to well-known and historically trouble-free fansites since that's the truth, but that doesn't mean it's not against the rules. Links on the chat boards are not allowed at all, regardless of the site. (Everyone, please read those previous sentences very carefully and consider what we mean. We're trying to be nice and give you guys a break with the strict rules, but if all it's causing is confusion we'll just have to remove all links.) Freewebs sites in particular are among those that are at the very top of our warning list. This is because freewebs has historically been used and abused by scammers and are not tolerated at all, regardless of the content of the site. We're just not going to risk it. Perhaps your site can be placed on Petpages? As far as the other site, you didn't leave the username, so we can't say why it is or isn't down. Often others' sites are known to be benign enough that a monitor prefers to focus on larger matters at hand, or perhaps it was just never reported. Also, (and this goes for just about all warnings and stuff) please consider this scenario:

Think of a monitor as a teacher of a class with thousands of students. Billy is picking his nose and gets reprimanded, while on the other side of the classroom Bobby is cheating off of Sally's homework and gets off scot-free. While Billy may feel it was silly of him to be warned while Bobby is doing something much worse, nose picking still isn't allowed, and Bobby's poor behavior simply wasn't spotted by the teacher at that time. Eventually we're sure Bobby will get sent to the principal for his bad deeds, but every bad action simply can't be spotted by the teacher at all times.

Wow, Daze! I must admit, I'm really surprised TNT actually said that. GREAT info, though!

I wish TNT would put up a clear list of fansites which are appropriate to link to. It would make it easier.

I have already submitted the suggestion to TNT, asking them to allow some exceptions on which outside sites are appropriate to link to. I also asked them to put up a clear list of fansites which are suitable. Let's wait and see what TNT will say.

I just had a thought - wouldnt it be funny if after this big long conversation it turned out your friend was already a member here.

Haha I can just imagine the conversation.

"So!"
"So..."
"How was your weekend?"
"I need to tell you something but I don't know if you know."
"Do YOU know?"
"Maybe... but I don't know if you know."
"Oh I know."
"You know?!"
"Yeah I know."

I doubt it. I know she is quite new to neopets because I saw her posting to look for more neofriends on the HC and I had to get her out of harm's way before the flamers arrived. Anyways, that was the reason I wanted her to join PPT, to introduce her to new friends without being flamed.
