Beware of a scammer\hacker.

Tue Jul 20, 2004 1:40 am

I was just in a chat I'm normally in everynight, and one of the people there, whom is in the same guild as me, was talking about scamming and hacking random people. I do beleive he's serious. He also said something about Neopets is going to be heck soon. All I can say is watch out.

His UN is Icemanx1O1, and he's known by that name on AIM and Neopets. please watch out for him.

Oh okay thank you very much, but he appears to be frozen, and does anybody remember the sticky scammers thread? I wonder where it is? o_O

Tue Jul 20, 2004 3:34 am

Goodness, people forget that it is just a game.

Honestly, I think Neopets ought to start threatening to press charges against people for such things--I don't know if there is any law out there--yet--but there really ought to be. It's a shame that the law seems to be two steps behind the internet.

Instead of just freezing an account or doing an IP ban, they should warn that if you steal things, you will be arrested. I realize that it is virtual--but, hey, copyrights and trademarks aren't tangible--yet you can't steal them without getting charged for a crime. Maybe that would knock some sense into these people who seem to have nothing better to do but be mean to other people--people who may be faceless and nameless, but are real people.

And, I must quote John Lennon once more and ask these scammer/hacker nasties: " How do you sleep?" May their consciences eat them alive!

OK, I will get off of my soapbox now. :x

it's a pity that most of the honest players are suffering mainly from a group of scammers/cheaters. they cheat/scam with the intention of sabotage or griefing. you would realise that many obvious cases of cheating/scamming are done with this intention. for example unrealistc game scores, obvious autobuying traits (restocking 4 or more neocola token out of 7 in one restock), chain messages and posting obsene pictures in shops are mostly done for others to report them with the intention of hampering the TNT support. rich accounts were broken into and their stuff sold for 1 np; mainly to frustrate the owners, sabo unsuspecting buyers rather than for any tangible gains. in fact, most scammers understand that they won't be able to keep the stuff they scammed anyway..not even by transferring.

hm... this is kind of unrelated, but there used to be a scammers thread. Whenever I tried warning users my topic was always locked, and from I heard, one or two ppters fell for it and lost everything. There are a lot of scammers and hackers who target ppt now :(

Tue Jul 20, 2004 4:31 am

I think it's because PPT is the second most well known help site (bowing only to the undeserving Soup Faerie...), and it's also pretty well known that we have more than a fair share of wealthy Neopians on our forum. It's sick that these people can't just make their own damn NP. It makes me so mad. :x I hear about a new (or rehashed) scam every week, if not more often. It's so rediculous. As if stealing someone elses PLAY money will make you more popular/cool/rich. One word: BLAH!

I strongly disagree. As you said yourself, 'Goodness, people forget that it is just a game. '

I extremely dislike hackers/scammers, but still, arresting someone for a virtual currency isn't the smartest thing to be done. IP bans take most of them out, anyway.

Yes, when will people learn it's just a game? Well, like one big game.

I wouldn't reccomend posting your username in public here, because you could get targeted.

Tue Jul 20, 2004 5:06 am

yeah one thing is keeping your username on this forum from going public. maybe it's ok for a few old members to know one another's neopets userid but the general idea is to try shielding it from visitors. in some situation where it is important for members to refer to your neopets username, try to use the private message. for example, when trying to sell something in the trading post by advertising in PPT, it is better to inform interested parties to notify/negotiate offers through private messages, rather than posting your trade links

Thanks for the warning, was recently hacked and lost 7mil :(

SOUP-FAERIE?!!!!! Bah! Their game guides are so unuseful. It's icomplete and the ones there are bogus.
When you play it, look more ahead than directly at the scorchio, so you know what's coming. Don't look much back at the scorchio, but still avoid the obstacles.

What kind of tip is that?!!!

i think shes just commenting on how sad these people must be, if they devote their time to stealing virtual items and points. thats my impression anyway, correct me if i'm wrong,

the problem with IP banning is that if the do a broad ip ban, it may also take out legit players on the same isp. also what about those isp who do a dynamic ip thing, *scuse my shoddy terminology, i'm not terribly well aquainted with this thing* like AOL which reassigns ip addresses, sometimes during a single session? a friend had alot of hate mail *because a person who didn't like her got her website addy* and when i told her to just IP ban the person, thats what she said, and i assume it applies to all sites as well.

personally, i'm a fan of the temporary banning system, where for minor offenses like spamming, a person gets banned for like a week? and serious offenses get frozen, period.

Tue Jul 20, 2004 7:24 pm

Ugh. There's no chance of people targeting me... I'm gonna be off Neopets for a while, till they get off their Cutesy obsession. But I've been scammed before, and it's horrible.

Tue Jul 20, 2004 10:48 pm

Scammers and hackers are really easy to avoid, simply do not go to any off site links, except for the ones you know, don't give out your IM, log out every time, never give out your password, and you should be safe.
