Never saw this scam before, be alert

Thu Feb 15, 2007 2:19 pm

Received this neomail today. The person in question had already sent a friend request.

"Hay rauven!

I just found this cool new website on neopets. Check it out! Its 'http://www.neopets.com/refer.phtmlusername=<name>' : http://www.neopets.com/refer.phtmlusername=<name>
If you've seen it before tell me.

bye!"

No need to put her name on, but be alert!!!!

EDIT: can't remove the link, but since i took off the name, it's harmless, and gives you a 404

Yeah but what if some newbie sign up to see what it is?

What if they change it to "sign a new acc and you'll get a fantastic Super Attack Pea"?

True. We would have a problem then.

Actually, I got a neomail on one of my side accounts (forgot to make NM friends-only, whoops) a while ago with the link, saying that it'd give me a free paint brush of my choice.
I rolled my eyes and reported it, but you're right... it could happen. I thought something that that would have died down fast.

Just as easily as this could be a scam, it could also be someone who doesn't quite understand how the referral system works. I've received emails like this before, and just replied explaining that they had to show people who didn't use Neopets in order to receive referrals.

Not everyone on the website is old enough to understand some of its aspects. Don't undermine that.

She's 6 months... i really don't think she's good at scamming, but this can as easily be a bad scam as she's not knowing. That's why i don't think she'll be frozen, just warned. BUT you have to admit the case where people use this advertising items... And i really think she was trying to scam:

She wouldn't say it's a place to sign in, she says it's a new website on neo as a draw.
