Keep Having to Log In...

Tue Feb 13, 2007 2:47 am

The past three days, I have to keep logging into Neopets. I'm the only one using my computer, so I never log out. My cookies have NOT been deleted. But now, every time I even change browsers from Netscape to IE, I have to log into the site. If I haven't been on the site for a couple hours, I have to log back in.. Is this happening to anybody else?? :(

Yes. I have been having the same problem since yesterday.

I don't know if this helps at all (seeing as how you said you only use one computer), but JellyNeo reports a new security alert that MAY apply to your problem:

Neopets has a new security feature that has been released, and it causes you to be logged out of one computer while you log-in on another!

This means that if you log-in in a library and forget to log out (but you log-in at home), your account should be safe, as long as Neopets keeps the feature on and doesn't remove it. (But NEVER rely on this feature to help you log out if you use a public computer - ALWAYS log out manually when using a public computer after you're done! This ensures that you have really been logged out, since you're seeing the logged out mainpage!)

However, this also can be annoying. If you're like me (and log in on three computers), it gets pretty annoying having to type in your password on one computer while getting logged out on two others. But I'll deal. :P

If that doesn't apply at all, then I'm sorry, I have no idea why you have to keep logging in.

Yep, that explains what's happening to me.

Wow, that's annoying. Means I'm going to have to go from never logging in to logging in twice a day.

I just use the one computer, so I'm not sure why the new security precautions should affect me. But I DO switch browsers once a day or so. I normally use Netscape 7, but switch to IE for games that only play Flash 8. For some odd reason, Flash 8 always crashes my Netscape. So I have Flash 7 on Netscape and Flash 8 on IE. I really wish they'd make the games backwards compatible with Flash 7. It's a much more stable version than 8, IMHO.

Cookies have now been tied to IP address (they were once before, long ago, in the dark ages, for about 3 months or so).

So that means that when you turn off your internet connection, unless it's static, you'll have to log in. And once you log in with a new IP address, your old login information is no longer valid.

As always, your cookies in IE are separate from your cookies in Explorer.

It logs you off when you switch browsers on the same computer, too. I use Firefox now, but neodaq.xls invokes IE (thx again, MS  !) and now always comes up logged off.

Hmm. Is this intended to be an anti-cookie-grabbing measure, then?

I still find it annoying but if it significantly improves the security of the site I'll live with it (not that I have a choice!)

Thanks for the info. At least I now know to expect that I'll have to log in each time I switch computers and/or wireless hotspots, or my IP address changes on me.

I have not had to re-log in more than once for each browser when switching between browsers (Opera & Firefox). I do have to re-login on either browser after switching computers, but at least I don't seem to have to re-login when switching back and forth...

EDIT: There may be a lag in re-login times. I had to re-enter my login on Opera just now. I also was unable to log in even after carefully retyping the password. Then rentered it again with my "birthday". Mild panic set in, so I switched back to an open Firefox and tried to change the password to no avail... until I noticed that the caps lock was on.

Ugh - so this is permanent...Owell I'm sure I'll get over it, as the previous poster said if it makes the site safer thats a good thing - but it does mean I'm going to be logging in a bunch more - I switch computers frequently both at home and at work...

I did not have the problem, but my friend did a few days ago when it was being really slow.

I can understand appreciate the benefit of the updated security . It will help whenever someone forgets to log out of a public terminal.

Unfortunately, I missed Tarla's last giveaway because of it. :x
The toolbar flashed, clicked, got the link... Got the log-in page. By the time I got logged in and back to the giveaway page, she was gone :(

EDIT: Despite losing out on a giveaway, I am OK with the change - it seems like a good thing. However, I will need to remember to re-login whenever changing computers.

I'm fine with the update, especially with multiable computers, I don't want to get in trouble.

Well, I'm becoming more accustomed to the new security change. It's kind of a drag, but it's worth it in the long-run, I guess. Any time I change browsers, I have to log back in, even if both browsers are running on the same IP address. For those of us keeping track of our stocks using the .xls spreadsheet, it's kind of a hassle, unless you use IE all the time. I use Netscape, but the .xls calls out via IE, so I have to remember to open up IE and log in before running the spreadsheet....
