full treasure map: gives you 5 random items (can get a junk item worth 500nps to a dark battle suck worth 800k), you can get a map for 170-180k

full lab map: give you access to the lab ray + a prize (I think), you acn get a map for around 450k

yeah, my last one got me 11k nps, a rainbos sofa (11k), iron lupe sword (150k) and some other stuff, its just betting wether or not your gonan get something good

I know that you can get high-rarity Battle Magic items from the treasure map, so a DBD should be no exception.

Spooky Map - You get several Spooky Foods plus a reward (complete map is around 45K last time I checked.)

No prize with the lab map, just lab access.

I'm pretty sure all the other maps (space, underwater, spooky) are similar to the treasure map in that they give you np and random prizes. The type of prize just changes with every different map.

you actually are supposed to get some nps back for teh lab map, on my first map, i got back around 10k or so, but when i put my second one together on my adoption account, i got, nothing so i wonder if they changed it

No, I got lab access 5 days ago and I got around 10-11k.

Neononsense has a great guide to all 5 treasure maps. It shows all of the pieces you need to complete each one and the types of prizes that are given out when you have all required pieces in your inventory. Four of the maps give out nps and items. Two of those also give a level up to your pet. The fifth map, the lab map, allows you to go to it daily with one of your pets in the hopes of changing your pet's species, color, gender and raising its stats.

On the subject, how much on average would 3 pieces cost me? I have six already that a friend gave me and I need to know if I should wait, or buy the other three now.

If it is a lab map, then I would say that you should probably buy now.
