What does the defence and strength stats do in battle? I'm stil puzzled by it

The higher they are, the more damage/defence a pet does.

Not correct. THere are certain markers for more damage and defence in the battledome. like stregth 65

They are called boosts. When you get to the next boost, each icon your weapons produce to more damange.
i.e - The 85 strength boost will do more damage than the 55 boost.
