Neopet Spelling errors

Tue Jan 23, 2007 3:21 pm

After cruising the past news, I found this:

1st September 2000
A new address has been set up to report any spelling mistakes, grammatical errors or typos. If you spot any on your travels please email them to mailto:typos@neopets.com including what page it was on.

I see spelling errors all the time (especially in the battledome) and on another forum we have a thread where we've been posting them. Ones like:

In the battledome:

"You reads the scroll of freezing and freezes (pet) for one round!"

"(pet) attacks you with the power of thier air faerie crown!"

"You gain fourty hit points from the green scorchstone!"

"(pet) throws a (should be an) Ultranova into the air, bathing you with searingly hot light!"

Hissi Alphabet description:
A great book to help teach your Neopet their alphbet featuring lots of different Hissies.

Any you've seen recently?

Some of them may be due to the cut and paste element of the sentences. For I'd assume the example the "a/an ultranova" is because a number of weapon names could be inserted there not all of them beginning with a vowel.

Well then they could still use the cut/paste method, but instead of the word "a" being placed with the rest of the sentence, the article could be tacked on to the noun being used so it will agree.

That sounds like a good and logical plan..... which explains why it's never going to be implemented ;)

The only problem with that is that the name of the item is "Ultranova"...

If the article was attached, then you'd in your shop, you'd have An Ultranova (4 in stock), A Weewoo (9 in stock), A Holographic Coltzans Shrine (1 in stock)....

It would look really strange.
Alternately, the a/an or his/her (rather than their) options would have to be connected to each item and pet in the database, and be coded into the sentence. Every time someone got a message relating to that item, the system would have to access the database to figure out which article/pronoun to use. That would take up a LOT of database space. It is much easier to settle for lower grammatical standards on these things than to do all that extra coding.

However, for definite errors (like the alphbet one), send TNT a comment/suggestion report from the bug report form, and tell them about it. You won't receive a response but SOMEONE will read it and perhaps they will eventually get around to it, once they're aware.

In languages like French, do they get the masculine/feminine correct?

"(pet) throws a (should be an) Ultranova into the air, bathing you with searingly hot light!"

That is only that one item though. That's the only item that has that particular phrase, so it shouldn't be hard for them to fix it. Ultranovas are the only thing that "bath you in searingly hot light". So it shouldn't be a set phrase if only the ultranova gives you that phrase.
