What do you think about a "cultural reference" gallery?

Sounds fun! Go for it!

It's not a good idea/too expensive. Don't bother.

Need help deciding on a gallery subject

Sun Dec 24, 2006 9:18 pm

When I first started Neopets, I wanted to put together an extensive plushie collection. I mean, they're just so cute to look at and many are well designed. After a year or so of this, however, I gave up, seeing as how a) practically everyone has a plushie collection that's way better than mine and b) it would be way too expensive anyway. So now I've got a considerable amount of gallery space that I've tried to fill with various things, but nothing's really held my interest. So this is a gallery idea I've been kicking around in my head for a few months, and I'd like some feedback on it before actually trying to put it together. Last thing I need is to waste more Neopoints than I already do.

Most of you have probably noticed that many of the items on Neopets are, or their descriptions contain, references to other pop culture elements (or things, whatever you want to call 'em). Some examples:

Sour Blue Slushie - "It is sour, and blue, da da dee da da da...." - This is likely a reference to the song Blue (Ba Da Bee) by Eiffel 65, which was a hit for about 20 minutes sometime back in the late 90's.

Amulet of Inevitable Betrayal - "Its laugh is an evil laugh!" - One of the most well-known, this item references lines of dialogue spoken by the character Wash from the TV series Firefly. Hoban's Hat, Hoban's Leftovers, etc are references to the same character.

Blumaroo Statue - "This Blumaroo has been waiting months for Aslan to arriveā€¦" - A reference to the book The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, part of the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis. In the story, all the statues in the wicked White Witch's castle were living creatures that she had turned to stone with her wand. When Aslan the Lion stormed her castle, he breathed on the statues in order to bring them to life again.

There's a good list to start from here, so it would keep me busy for a while. And fortunately, many of the things they mention are affordable. But there's a few - such as the U-Bend of Great Justice and (I'm pretty sure), the Ghostkersword - that are waaaaaay out of my price range. Also, someone may have a gallery like this already, which could also potentially discourage me, as I'm looking for something unique to do with my gallery space.

I'm also considering having a Pirate Plushie collection in there, but that would only take up a small portion of the space I've already bought. There needs to be something else, too. I'm also wide open to suggestions for alternate ideas, so feel free to discuss those too.

I've never seen a gallery like that... but then I haven't been looking at galleries for ages...

Maybe, but you should consider... the cheap and expensive items. Were you planning to get ALL the items?

That sounds like a really great idea. I'd say to go for it! :D

I was planning to get as many as possible. :P I suppose I could always ask for donations for the more expensive ones, but I hate doing that, as it sounds like begging no matter how politely I phrase it.

Ooo, that sounds like a good idea! I haven't heard of that one before :)

I'd love to see that gallery! Good luck with it, if it's what you decide to go with!

That's a really cool and unique idea! I'd go for it.

I really like that idea, also. Sure beats out my pretty common "Darigan" theme, hehe.

Thank you for the responses, everyone! :)

While I'm still thinking about it, I did clear out and sell some things from my old gallery ideas, and went ahead and put a few of the cheaper items in there. Eventually I'm going to sit down and plan just how much it would cost to build a gallery like this. (The items, I mean; I'm pretty sure I've got enough space already.) Depending on the cost and the number of items, it may be slow going, as I've got other Neopets goals too.
