Yep, in fact I'd like to propose that it happens more often when you're stuck with an ugly usul, the lab has a quirky sense of humour (and by quirky I mean it hates us).

Oh great! IT goes from red, to yellow! I"m afraid of using a morphing potion, cause if I do, {with my luck} the lap will zap it into a usul again

Just to add, I had a Usul lab pet and it didn't change for something ridiculous like 2 months... 
I eventually used a green uni morphing potion on it (ew) and now I have a desert uni. Still ugly, but at least I get changes now!
