Wow, a lot of the entries in the "How to transfer a Neopet" guide are REALLY dangerous ways to transfer a pet.

The only thing I'd add to "The Safest Way to Transfer a Neopet" section is instead of clicking "Go" AFTER abandoning, I'd do it before. That will warn you if you don't have enough NP out to adopt the pet and means that instead of clicking something you can just switch windows and start hitting F5. I'd also keep quite a lot of excess NP out if you have it, so that you'll still have enough to adopt the pet if you get a Mutant Kad or Tax Beast RE.

Actually, what's even safer is if you have two computers next to each other, so you can already *be* refreshing on the recieving account when you pound the pet. That only works if you have two computers, though (or if you're doing a two-person transfer). A similar effect can be achieved with only one computer by making the recieving browser Opera or Firefox and refreshing on the adoption link. I have never heard of someone being frozen for using an autorefresher in this context, but use at your own risk.

Getting a random event on the account you're transferring the pet to isn't possible while doing this since the only page you'll be loading is the page that adopts the pet for you and the action of adopting the pet will supercede anything else as that is the first thing the script is told to do.

The few times I've tranferred a pet I'm used auto-refreshers and it hasn't hurt me yet. I have two browsers open - one IE and one Mozilla - with the mozilla one being the adopter. Click four times on the Abandon button in the IE window, start the refresher (with 1 sec interval) in the mozilla window, then click the last abandon on the IE window. one or two refreshes later I have it and, since the page URL changed after the successful adoption, the refresher automagically stops.

:shrug: I know people who say they've had problems with it. I never have but that's why I said it.

You don't switch between the computers. You refresh on one *while* you abandon on the other, eliminating the pause while you switch windows (though I never minimize mine, takes too long to bring it up.)

I've done two-person transfers via AIM or MSN a lot of times... never with someone in the same house, but usually with people on the same continent. :-) It's not hard at all. You get everything settled, then one person sends that they're about to start refreshing. They immediately start refreshing and keep going until person sending the pet tells them it is either caught or has been lost in the transfer. The person sending the pet counts down from some number (usually 10) once they've been told the recieving party is refreshing to give them party time to switch windows and start refreshing (and to report any problems). I think it's actually probably a little safer than the one-computer method if both parties know what they're doing as it eliminates the time gap of switching between windows. If you're transferring pets from person to person instead of between your own accounts, it also eliminates any risks associated with letting someone else into one of your accounts.

If one or the other people doesn't know how to do two person transfers, then that's a different story.

Well, you wait until the page has loaded (although not necessarily until the images are displayed) until you refresh again. You don't just hammer it constantly. The main advantage is that it makes two-person transfers much easier and that there can be a lag of indeterminate length between clicking the abandon button and the actual abandoning of the pet. You obviously don't want to wait until the Quick Ref screen comes up confirming you have abandoned the pet comes up before you try to adopt: you want to start while the page is still loading. But of course if you try too soon, you want to try again very rapidly.

That would be why I said to use at your own risk, though (as I also said) I've never heard of anyone being frozen for using one during a routine pet transfer. Note that it does differ from the more standard use of autorefreshers to "play Neopets for you while you're not at your computer" as you are, of course, actually playing Neopets during the transfer. But yes, use at your own risk.
