The Neopets Toolbar has spyware, adware and malware

Wed Apr 26, 2006 12:41 pm

Since I've installed it on firefox, it has deleted all my neopets bookmarks (how ironic), search engines and redirects me to obscene search engines. Almost like Kazaa.

It's actually Velocity Services which is doing the problem as I think its the designer of this adware.

Currently I'm trying to modify it now...

I have never had any such problems with the neopets toolbar.. if it was th fault of the neopets toolbar surely it would affect all users of the toolbar.. and it obviously doesn't.. perhaps you've picked something up elsewhere.

Yes... what Kali said.

Still, I would suggest emailing TNT, by the way, in case it was caused by one of the banner ads on neo, that you might have clicked on accidentally. Does anyone but you use your computer? Perhaps they clicked on something on the same day you installed the toolbar?

And on the other hand, it could be a big coincidence, that you clicked something a while ago and it had a delayed "start date", some viruses and things do, where it doesn't turn on right away, but waits a bit and then starts doing bad stuff, so you have a harder time tracking where it came from.

Finally, for those who are reading this, I highly suggest installing and running software such as ad-aware (which catches the most stuff, but you have to remember to check for updates because they don't automatically download) and virus software like norton or mcafee.... and also be sure to back up your important files (your documents, your downloaded music files, your bookmarks, and your pictures) NO LESS THAN TWICE A MONTH.

I'm sorry to hear about your problem myname7772, but Neopets is a very reputable company and if your problems started the day you downloaded the toolbar, I truly believe it was a coincidence. Most of us have no trouble with it...

I agree with miz sparrow. Another good program to run is Spybot: Search and Destroy.

I've been using the toolbar on FIrefox only with no problem. Have you installed any other IE toolbars lately such as the Yahoo or Google one? I hear that it's mostly the Google one that's ridden with the spyware.

My scanner of preference is Spyboy: Search and Destroy as well. :D

Spyboy lol. I have spybot.

It's the current version with firefox as the IE one is clean.

The best Spyware search that I know of right now is CCleaner. Well...it's called CrapCleaner, but on your desktop, it says CCleaner. Anything that AdAware and SpyBot haven't caught, CCleaner has.

Also, try HijackThis! (I believe that's the name), then post the transcript on the computer help thread on the Technology board. :)

If no one else is having problems, then one of the banner ads did something or it was another site.

Google, psh. They make Google ads, but I don't think they make spyware.

I've installed the toolbar into Firefox on numerous occasions, and I get redirected to errorrelatedmatches whenever I try to use the I'm Feeling Lucky Google thing when I type a query in the adress bar.

We bought a new computer last month and we installed firefox, our plugins, and only put the neopets toolbar on one user profile. The profile with the toolbar had SearchFast and the other accounts didn't. It may have been a coincidence, but I won't be installing a Neopets toolbar again.

This was the new toolbar, by the way. We never had a problem with old (Ice Bori) toolbar.

I'm a premium user, but I don't get any of these problems, except "Error Related Matches" on bad URLs (which can be disabled in the options). Everyone should try following the advice at http://www.spywaresupport.com .

I believe that comes from a recent IE update. I've heard you can go to the Microsoft site and get a patch that fixes that.
