My first Armada opponent for the month wanted to set up a time and date for our game. My response to her was this:
"Most any time from now until the end of the day is good for me. Tomorrow is bad as school is ending and I have to drive home for most of the day, but if today doesn't work, how about Noon NST on Saturday?"
At which point I got the following message:
"ERROR : Do not send messages containing profanity, sexual terms, or other inappropriate content (including religion, politics, cheats, hacks, and password scams) on Neopets!
Do not use your browser's "back" button. Please use the "back" button below."
As the title states, am I missing something here? I eventually removed "bad ... home" and replaced it with "not good as I will be on the road", which went through just fine.
Any thoughts?

I found the problem above. And it's blue. Blue...

this is totally annoying. how does the neo team think the average player will know these subtle mistakes?

I've had the same issue with that same word combo. Actually, I think "bad as" by itself sets it off. *sighs* The neo filters are a pain in the kaboos.

Wow. I wouldn't have seen that. heh.
It's happened to me a few times, and I'm left puzzled, changing things around until it finally lets me send my message. It's a pain in the rear.

It rejected a rather long neomail I tried to send last week, and it took nearly 20 minutes of chopping chunks of the message out to determine that it was objecting to the word "document".
I assume they're trying to prevent people from bypassing the filter by spacing words out or running them together, but this is just stupid. At the very least, it should validate possible hits against a dictionary to make sure it isn't filtering out a perfectly good, innocent word.
I sent a bug report on it, though I rather doubt they'll fix it. My particular complaint isn't likely to come up all that often.

Actually, in this case they may actually be trying to block that word. There was another post here about this problem and someone suggested that it could be them trying to stop the recient cookie grabbers and such. Document is a word used in that sort of code.
Personally, I'm all for blocking neomails, html, css, petpages, lookups, customizing shops, etc especially if it makes the site more secure against idiots. I cannot stand opening shops and my computer nearly crashing because of all the darn blinking graphics and music...and I'm on a T1 line for cryin out loud. I can't imagine what "average" internet users have to go through on that site.

The only reason you don't want to block Neomails is that sometimes people need a safe way to actually discuss tihngs--trades, questions, etc. Also, TNT needs a way to contact people, and it's just as good a way as any.

True! That's about the only thing I'd greatly miss to any extent. I know a lot of people put a lot of time into petpages and such, but really...with some advance notice how hard is it to transfer the code (you should have it backed up anyway) to a free hosting site and just link to it?

I have gotten the same message several times and still cannot figure out what word they wanted deleted.

I had the sam problem a while ago.. it took a while to guess what was the problem. some times i get so annoyed with the filters..noe so much with neomail but in posting on my guild.
Fri Mar 03, 2006 4:10 am
Oh the things the filters "think" we're saying sometimes! I've gotten that Error message many times, the first time scared me half to death!
I was posting with my guildmates and typed something like ... I have to go, but I'll be back in a bit, ok?
I had to sit and stare at that page for so long before I figured out what the filters thought I was trying to say.
Fri Mar 03, 2006 5:03 am
Ha! Thanks for posting this, I had two rather long neomails deleted recently due to profanity and had no idea why.
But I remember both of them being about school. I probably did the same thing you did.
I say riot on the grounds that Neopets discourages education. Because you know rioting on the grounds that Neo discourages free speech will get you nowhere.
Fri Mar 03, 2006 7:35 am
Riot.. let there be a revolt.. and uprising among the peasants
Fri Mar 03, 2006 9:31 am
The least they could do is point out what they're blocking. Just about everyone who types things anywhere on the site has had something blocked.
I remember talking to someone about ancient texts (yeah, on neopets
) and ran into the 'document' block. Confused me to death, because I couldnt find anything wrong with "He'd translated the documents from around 1400BC..." Especially when it was mixed in with a mess of other stuff. If they'd just highlighted it for me, I couldve saved all that time I spent reading for stuff like 'bad as.'
While I wouldnt mind blocking customization for the sake of safety (if it had to come to that), getting rid of neomail, or any means of contact between players just sucks fun out of Neopets. Especially with no outside linking rules, and 'dont give out your IM/email info' stuff. I like the fact that its a community of people, and that you can ask questions with quick response, or get a random "hello!" neomail and end up in decent conversation. To preserve that, I really dont mind trying to figure out the filters.
