I know it's easy for people to make mistakes, but there's no excuse for this:
From the Battledome FAQ:
9. Do your pets actually do more damage if their strength is 50 vs. if it is 40?
Yes, if your pet's strength is 50 your pet will do more damage than if your pet's strength is 40.
10. Is it harder for your pet to be hit if their defense is higher?
Defence works similarly to strength. Your pet can defend itself more with a defence of 50 than with a defence of 40.

I think the FAQ is really old, from when the battledome first started.

The newbie in me does not see why those entries are inaccurate.

Does this have to do with stat boosts?

Yes, it does have to do with strength and defence boosts, though 50 is not a boost, 55 is. I've read through the bd faq and even I, who doesn't battle that much, had a good giggle at some of it.
That faq, if they're going to keep it, needs updating badly.

I doubt that whoever wrote that was actually unaware of how it works. Maybe they just didn't want to tip their hand and explain how boosts work. It makes it all seem a little less like a "real" battle if you understand the mechanics behind it. But yes, it is terribly outdated.
