Neopets filter too picky??

Mon Jul 05, 2004 5:44 am

I recently got a lab map and adopted a pet to use the lab ray on. I decided to keep a diary of his progress on the description of the pet. I tried to put +3 hit point on for day 2. I got a alert page for neopets stating that the word "hit" is not allowed on any postings on their site and to refrain from trying to use inapporpriate language on any posts. I think they are going a little far. How is the word "hit" an inappropriate word to use in a posting about your pets hit points?

I really don't see what's wrong with the word hit. It's not appropriate is it? Anyway, you could put hp instead of hitpoints.

Oh, this one's been going on for years! I remember one time where I tried to update my pet's page for Nanichan and it objected to the word the! Of course, I reported the glitch. I don't know when they fixed it because by that point I had given up on the petpages as being a huge waste of time, all thanks to a very goofy filter system! ;)

After trying about 5 times and having it object to about 6 different words, each one something that was almost unavoidable to use!

It's not the word hit, persay, but the fact that there's an s on the word in front of it. The filters that they use (which are common ones in most internet gaming, because I've had this problem countless times) ignore spaces.

Try saying, as awkward as it is, "the hit points of my pet" rather than using a possessive form.

They ignore the spaces because people try to be really creative about getting around them ;) Now, if they would just turn those energies to the side of good... I think my favorite was when Neopets had the word scammer/scam/scamming filtered for the Petpages! How the heck are you supposed to warn people away from scammers if you can't even say the word!? So.. it was sc[filter]am[filter]mer, with the disclaimer that [filter] was put in because Neopets didn't want us to warn people away from scammers! ;)

I tested it out, It's not the hit that's the problem, it's more of the +3 combined with the hit. Try writing out three.

For some reason, you can get aways with a little more in the gulds (for a while, anyway).

Oooh, so that's what made Cameron_Kirsten's petpet tell him not to swear (i.e. turned the filters on) that one time.
He did the action of 'hitting' Sharon (the petpet) on the head with a glass (champagne) bottle (kind of an inside joke, really. If you watch Y&R you'll get it)
I was wondering exactly what it was that made her 'say' that to him, but now I know. It's rather stupid really, because hit only means to strike at something, or it could mean, in the case of Neopets, hit points.
And, hey, even the image of a pet flying backward in the Battledome is called the HIT pose.

Ah yes..maaany websites have that. Once, on habbo hotel I was trying to write 'thats explained then!', and it kept coming up as thatbobbaplained.

Yeah, I remember trying to write it before and it didn't let me. I don't really think that many people would actually write "I will HIT you to death!" or something o_O

I think its more banned because of the connotations of being 'Hit on' as in the boyfriend/girlfriend sense.

But, it is pretty stupid and annoying, probably some silly legal thing.

It's a violent term, innit?
Bash isn't allowed either.

Meh. The filters on Neo are insane. It wouldn't let me type "Hello" once because it contained the word "hell". Yet, 5 minutes later, I saw someone on the Neoboards telling someone else to go to hell.

Go figure.

Mabye its because to "hit on" someone is to make moves of a personal nature toward them. Stupid, but there you go. Its like how someone got a warning for saying they were "40+" years old because 40+ is 1337 for hot....
