Flash Game Problems with "lagging"

Thu Jul 01, 2004 5:04 am

There's been a problem with some of the action flash games on my computer for a couple of weeks now. I thought it would "fix" itself or maybe it was Neo, but now I'm not sure. I'm not great at explaining this, so bear with me? o_O

Yes, I have flash7 and shockwave. My system resources are about 90% free, temporary internet is kept cleared, on dial up, but that shouldn't be doing this. Have Mcafee, spybot, ad-aware and spywareblaster, IE 6.1 all current updates.

So, for some games like the igloo garage sale game, where the little chia is supposed to kind of slide back and forth? Instead he kind of moves...just a .... little and ... sticks. Can you get an image of that? Usuki frenzy, kind of the same thing, when she gets one of the sets, the game almost pauses for a split second. Ultimate bullseye, the arrow doesn't hit the bullseye thing smoothly, it almost "bounces" because again there's this like miniscule pause. That's the only way I can describe it.

Should I uninstall and reinstall the flash 7 and shockwave do you think? Everything worked fine until recently. The only thing that's different on my computer is I updated spybot from version 1.2 to 1.3.

Thanks!

Same, here. It's been much slower for me than usual. Maybe TNT is working on their sytem or something.

I get the same thing with Turmac Roll especially, and Frumball. It seems to be just the shockwave games for me. Very jerky, and sometimes it will seem to lock up, and then fix itself after I've had a second to get peeved. I always just thought it was my computer, though...

One possibility to consider is if you have gmail (or any other website that reloads itself) open in the background. I had that problem for a few days until I'd realized that was the cause. As soon as I closed the open window to gmail, it stopped completely.

Hi! Thanks everyone for posting. I don't feel quite so frustrated now, seeing that other people are having this problem.

I would never have known it myself, as I don't play games anymore due to some bad problems with my hands. But my best friend uses my computer to play Neopets (doesn't own her own puter and yes, she has her own email, etc.). She pointed it out to me while trying to play the Igloo game.

Avvelenare, you describe it very well --

Thing is it doesn't "fix" itself on my computer. It just stays jerky and kind of laggy. I sat and watched my friend play Kiko Match. When she clicked on a square the image didn't just pop up, it took a second, and then clicking on another square made it go even slower. I don't know how she got through the game, I would have given up. It was making my hand hurt watching her have to repeatedly click the mouse on the same squares after awhile, that's how sticky and laggy it was getting by I think level 8 or 9.

Iconoplast, I don't have gmail. I do have McAfee, spybot, ad-aware and spywaresweeper. I don't know if it could be one of those, I know they kind of run in the background, but I don't think they refresh or reload themselves. And I keep the system clean otherwise - temporary cache, graphics, cookies, and system clean up are run once a day (at least).

Well, thanks again. If anyone comes up with anything, let me know?

It happens for me too, it was exceedingly frustrating.

The best thing to do is to just set the game quality to Low, and the game will continue to play like normal 0:)

Unfortunately, you might just have a slow computer. If you do what Matt suggested, it should help the problem (at least a bit).

Matt, Atomic thank you both! I will pass on to my friend about setting the quality lower. What else to do I'm not sure. This just started a couple of weeks ago, I guess that's why I'm a bit bewildered by it.

The only reason I can think why my computer could be slow is I'm still on dial up. Just can't afford the high speed. A shame with having an AMD athlon, 512 ddr, 80 gig, hercules 3d prophet graphics, 90% resource free computer.

Well, right now I don't play games, and my friend is willing to put up with it (she loves her games!), so hopefully the lower quality will do the trick.

That's odd - I haven't had problems, but I haven't been playing too many games recently.

It might be worth reinstalling flash/shockwave, but I don't know if it will do any use.

Bingo right there. :) I used to have dial-up and the games behaved exactly like you described on high quality. Low-quality really speeds them up. ^_^

Atomic, I will tell my friend to just play games on lower quality. If they still do the sticky/lag thing, well there's not much else I can do, right?

Alex, I did take your suggestion. I went to the macromedia site, checked my flash and shockwave (there's a test page on the site) and found there's an update for shockwave. It's now 10.0.1, something like that and supposedly fixes an "issue in 10.0 signed components for XPSP2 compatibility".

There's one problem and this is for anyone who goes to upgrade/update or download this new shockwave -- It also installs Yahoo Taskbar which was a total nightmare. If I tried to install without the Yahoo, the shockwave wouldn't install. So fine, download again, let it install the Yahoo which immediately made my ISP go insane. So I had to go to add/remove programs and got rid of the Yahoo and did a quick search to make sure it was all gone.

Now whether this will affect the way the new shockwave works I have NO idea, I can only hope it won't.

Sounds nasty. Thanks for the warning! I just x out the upgrade thing every time it pops up anyways.

all these programs running in the background might slow things down!

the only problem im having is that i cant start castle of eliv thade

Untouchable, is that still happening? When I used to try playing that (when it first came out) I think I only got that game to actually load and be playable like 3 times. The rest of the time either black blank screen or it would load to the dictionary and just stop. I gave up on that one eons ago. A shame because I love word games.
