Just got this off the Avatar Chat:
Current Topic: FYI Everyone, this is important
Neopets is now freezing accounts if you ever hold down the F5 key to refresh to get an avie. I think it's riduculous but HeatherT at Neopets said they consider it a way to cheat.
(cont.)
Exact quote "Hi,
Thank you for writing. As I stated before, autorefreshing is considered
a type of autobuying. It unbalances the game and is against our Terms
and conditions. Using a heavy object to hold the F5 key is a simple type
of autorefresher. This account will not be returned.
If you have any other questions, don't forget to include the entire
text of this e-mail with your username"
Ok then.....how exactly are they able to do that? I mean, they release avatars that require refreshing, attching petpetpets requires refreshing, etc. I can see trying to keep out autoBUYERS, but I just don't get that. Maybe someone can explain this to me?

TNT doesn't right Hi so cheerfully like that when they freeze someone.
They'd say "Hello"
And a staff member name and email at the bottom.

Yeah, I wondered if the e-mail was real or not. But, I have heard of people getting frozen for supposedly using "auto-refresher" programs. How could TNT tell if they were using one, or holding down f5?

If the person writing to support was just writing to ask a question, the response could have started with "Hi", I've gotten a couple that start that way.
The whole refresh thing is crazy. Yes, I have heard of people being frozen for using an auto-refresher even though that is something that comes with certain browsers. It can still be considered a downloadable cheat.
I know I get truly nervous having to either click F5 or click the little refresh arrow on my browser bar for something like getting a DoN opponent or an avatar. I don't put anything on the F5 key, I just click, let the page load completely, then click again. I'll only do that 5 or so many times then leave and try again later. An opponent or avatar is just not worth risking my account.
Maybe this whole auto-refresh thing is TNT's way of dealing with people who, say, go to terror mountain and repeatedly refresh to get more winter RE? I don't know, but they should just stop with all having to refresh for these things if they're going to freeze people for them. I don't know that much about autobuyers to be honest, but I don't think? they have to refresh.

I've gotten one that started with "Hi there," twas friendly (I was inquiring about the Random contest prizes they forgot to send me =P).

well, I tried this:
refreshing for like an hour wont get you frozen (at least it didnt get the mule I used frozen)
Refreshing for a long period of time...(like one night) will get you frozen. It says something about using a "bot" for gaining neopoints...I really dont get why they do that, since random events are not even that common.

I would like it if they would take note of the location of the auto-refreshing. For example, if you are auto-refreshing in the pound when transferring your own pet - that does no harm to anyone, sure transferring isn't allowed but it doesn't actually harm anyone.
Auto-refreshing on pages that get you an avatar - what harm does that do anyone? Auto-refreshing in your inventory for petpetpet attaching - what harm does that do? Auto-refreshing to get the lab ray scientist challenger - ...you get the idea. And why should people be punished for trying to get something that neopets has set up to be gained that way?
The only place where it should be a big deal is in shops as then it could be an auto-buyer rather than an auto-refresher - shops restock at a certain time so you don't need to refresh often to restock from there legitimately. I can't imagine that it would be too difficult for neopets to set it so they can tell where the refreshing is taking place - or to only look for it in shops in the first place.
I don't think that e-mail is real but I do think neopets has to start being an awful lot more fair. They set up situations where to get something that is supposedly easy, like an avatar or battledome challenger or petpetpet attachment, you have to refresh a lot - but in doing so you're scared you'l get frozen for it. That's ludicrous. And this on top of people being scared to be good at flash games in case they are frozen for cheating with absolutely no evidence to prove it.
Neopets needs to get a grip - it's a game site that is meant to be enjoyable. They need to stop punishing the people who stick to the rules for simply enjoying themselves.
</rant>
Oh and for random events, why don't they just set it so that they are random as you change page rather than just refresh, and when you make a move on nq, pyramids etc rather than just refresh - then there would be no reason at all for refreshing to be a problem outside of the shops. They'd get more page hits and we'd be able to breathe more easily. Or would that be too sensible....

I have heard firsthand (from the staff, not the kid) the story of a kid that killed $1000 USD in one night by putting a roll of quarters on his F5. That's the main reason it's not allowed, I would guess.

How did he, um, kill $1000, if I may ask?

Oops, I meant $1000 in bandwidth. My brain skipped two words.
Lol.
Edit--yeah, listen to Mindy.

Wow, I didn't even think of that. But yeah, that could get to be a serious problem. Yikes.

I had a feeling it came on Neo's list of no-no's. I think they should put it in the rules though and specify exactly

It wouldn't suprise me if they do something like this in order to determine what might/might not be an auto refresher. The location plus the duration of the refreshing is probably a good indication of when a program is being used as 2 minutes worth of refreshing at a page that has a random avatar is likely to be completely innocent. Could be wishful thinking.

If refreshes occur at almost exact intervals, it usually is a program. Sometimes, a heavy object may cause very similar intervals as well, and may be mistaken for a program. Refreshing by hand is obviously always going to have different intervals, and usually won't be mistaken for an Auto-Refresher.
