Mystery Pic #389

Wed Mar 23, 2005 1:22 am

Congratulations! You have guessed correctly in the Mystery Pic game (Round 388). We have given you a Strawberry Cream Pizza and 2629 NP!

The answer was Zygorax the Grundo from the Neopedia.

The hints given:

XenaAndGabrielle: Oopsy ... did I miss a spot? Maintenance work is never fun.

Cranberry: Eht snoitseuq uoy elpoep era gniksa era tsomla sa gnisufnoc sa eht yaw esoht elttil syug desu ot klat! (This is "The questions you people are asking are almost as confusing as the way those little guys used to talk!") This refers to back when grundos were new to Neopia and TNT insisted they all speak backwards. See? If you understood this hint and did a search for "grundo" in the yellow sidebar, you got a link to the Neopedia article about Zygorax.

XenaAndGabrielle again: Secret Garbage Cans? I never knew such a thing existed! (Zygorax talks about "classified rubbish bins.")

I tried an experiment this time as I was not totally happy with how to word my entry. Some people have said before they have put in the image url......so my entry was:
images.neopets.com/neopedia/11_zygorax_clean.gif
and managed to win.

I use Windows Paint to check my images ... but I have no idea what the guide is talking about. It must be a different version of "paint" or I just am silly. :)

Here's how I *used* to check things (I have a new way, as of last week). ... but I would be very interested in actually learning a way to check and compare actual colors in the image.

I would save the mystery pic and open it up using the standard viewing program in Windows XP (windows picture and fax viewer). I keep it large to help my poor eyes out.

Next ... any image that I think looks like a decent prospect, I load it into Windows XP Paint. Then I "view/zoom/custom ... 800%" and try to match up the pixels. (As you can see ... this method is fairly slow)

I just found a neat program on my computer, though ... called magnifier. It is a little app that is for people with bad eyesight ... and it basically magnifies the area around your curser in another window. (Way Cool!)

So now, I do the same thing as before ... except I just have my browser open ... and a "magnified window" above it that shows the magnified view of where my cursor is. I have a third window (the mystery pic) open on the screen as well ... so I can just toodle around wherever I feel like looking. I'm not exactly sure how cool this will be in the long run, but it seems to work OK.

As you can see ... this method has no actual "color recognition" properties ... but I figure my eyes are good enough for it ... and the "shapes" of the pixels are more important. But this is why I have a hard time sometimes when there is a bright pixel in the mystery pic somewhere, and I end up using that as my guide ... but if the actual picture doesn't have it in it when I have expanded it ... I can easily miss it. This happens occasionally when the image is a jpg, or other times that I cannot explain.

Sorry this post ended up so long ... but I figure it might help some of the newer searchers. :) Everyone has their own way, though.

(P.S. No trophy upgrade ... I thought this one might have been my chance)

I use Paint Shop Pro 7 and I don't actually save any images to my computer; I just do screencaps of them. If you screencap the MP (and reduce it to 13x13) and screencap any pics you want to check, the pixels will match up perfectly -- I've never had any pixel or color distortion. I just "paste as new selection" the MP into the pic I want to check and see if it fits anywhere. If I need to make it bigger to see detail, I use the magnifying glass tool to zoom in. It's a very fast and accurate method.

I've checked shop blogs and it's not there, although the Jetsam Chomp! one is very close in color.

I've tested two seperate article's graphics for matches so far in the Neopedia. Apparently Pepto pink and cranberry are common enough together. Maybe I'm being extra careful after missing last weeks.

Yeah, they do seem to use these together a lot when drawing red pets. I had to check two shop blogs and a couple backgrounds.

I checked all plushie pets

EDIT: Finished Neo. On to greetings.

For some silly reason, I am still up. Checking various headers. Reminds me of them again.
