Password Emails from TNT??

Mon Feb 21, 2005 12:07 pm

I just checked my ISP email account and found 3 messages from TNT with my login information, including user name and password. The 3 messages were sent within 30 minutes of each other. Call me paranoid, but I'm kind of freaking out. It's obvious that someone is trying gain access to my account. What do I do besides changing my password (which is fairly impossible to guess anyway)??? Has this happened recently to anyone else? The only thing I've done out of the ordinary lately is I had to sign up with Neoitems.net a couple days ago to gain access to their items database. :(

People can request that your password be mailed to your indicated e-mail. If they cannot access your e-mail, that information is safe. If your username is similar to others, it could be an honest mistake.

Yes, exactly. I don't think there is any cause for worry.

I kind of doubt that it was an honest mistake from a similar sounding user name, due to the timing of the emails. The emails were sent at 4:37pm, 4:57pm, and 5:02pm. There's nothing missing in my account as of now, and it's been almost 12 hours since the emails were sent. I'm just kind of creeped out by it, since this has never happened to me in the four years I've been playing.

There's no way anybody could change my email address with Neopets, is there?? Don't you need to input your password to make email changes? Do I need to notify TNT that someone has tried to gain access to my account? Or will that just open a can of worms? (I don't want them to ice me to protect the account).

PS: I just realized there's no way this could be associated with my signing up over at Neoitems, because the screen name I chose there isn't the same one I use on the Neopets site.

It is probably someone playing a prank on you or some naive scammer trying to gain hold of your account. There is no way to accomplish this so long your email account is secure. So don't worry, there is no cause to be paranoid.

The same thing happened to someone else a couple of weeks ago. It is probably just either someone who thought that, that was their account and wondered why their password wasn't working. Or some silly person trying to scare you. The password went through to you, so there is nothing to worry about. And no, you can't change the email address for an account without being logged into it first. :)

Sierra, this same sort of thing happened to me several months ago and, like you, I freaked out. My suggestion is to change the passwords on your account and your email account and to change the secret question on your email account. You may even want to move your Neopets accounts to a new email account.

I finally figured out that mine was probably tied to the fact that I had foolishly put my real name on my user lookup and had an email address that was a variant of my name: first name_last name@emailprovider. com. It happened right after I had put a bunch of pricey ETS's in my shop--so my guess is that someone thought that maybe, just maybe, they could guess my email account, guess my secret question, and then get into my Neopets accounts.

I no longer have my real name on my user look up and no longer use an email address that even closely resembles my real name, PPT name, or Neopets user names. And, my secret question is a two-parter--so hard that only two people in the world know it and the other person probably doesn't even remember. I won't say exactly what it is but it is similar to something like: "Who was your best friend in grade school and what is his/her birthdate?" Nothing easy like my mother's maiden name or my pet's name.

I don't know if this helps. But, I had to let you know that it has happened to others before and did not appear to be a joke or a case of mistaken user name.

The best thing, of course, would be to not use a hotmail address. Those are the easiest hacked emails out there. Just get a pop3 email account with your provider. No more hassle with secret questions. No more chance of being hacked.

Thanks everyone for the great replies! Fortunately, I haven't received any further emails from TNT with my user information. So I guess whoever was trying to access my account finally gave up. :)

I have a Pop3 account with my ISP, and that is the email address I use with Neopets. I very, very rarely give that address out to other Neopians. Instead I use a Yahoo webmail address for Neofriends. I always make sure that my passwords for different sites are unique, difficult to decipher, and changed on a regular basis.

Morningstar, I too never list my email address on PPT Forums. I don't even like to post what my Neopets user name is. But that's mainly because I don't want TNT to know it in case they don't like my opinions.

I had that happen to me a while back with one of my spare accounts... I used a junk email for it, and after a few months I checked that email to do a little cleaning and found half a dozen TNT recovered pw emails... freaked me out a bit but then I thought it might have been because of that glitch a while back that deleted old accounts and there was a rush to get the "good" names... remember that? I got hold of one and I figured the emails may have been requested by the original owner returning after 50 years... Though that seems far fetched now that I think about it. Bottom line, I'm sure you're in no danger, just excercise common sense. :P

Probably best to use an email no one knows like one you havent given out to your friends

Some administrators of Neopets related communities look at the username and password of a new member. They then try to log into Neopets using them, and sometimes succeed, hacking the account.

So make your password different on a forum than your account.
