I just got creeped out--big time. There is a banner ad that has a very realistic large cockroach running around it. Ugh, I get goosepimples just thinking of it. It is for the iPod. "Hit the bug" and you win an iPod.
Grrr!
Don't get me wrong. I can handle almost all of the ads. Wall Street Journal, people asking me if I need a doctor, WeightWatchers (as I am putting a doughnut to my lips), etc. But a realistic bug running across my screen. Eeek!

There was a code for IE quite a few topics back... I'll go try and find it, if someone else doesn't find it first. I don't know the directions two any other of the browsers, though...

- Code:
div.ban,div#ban {
display: none !important;
}
Save as a .css file and be sure it's somewhere you remember. (That's the most important.) I saved mine as neopets.css.
Next, open up IE. Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Accessibility. Under "user style sheet", check off "Format documents using my style sheet." Next, Browse for your saved file. Click "OK". "OK" again, and then go to a Neopets page. It should disappear.
I found this method in the Neocolours forum. (But I saw it such a long time ago, the above is in my own words) Though the user who posted it has escaped my mind at the moment...
There it is. It doesn't get rid of the banner ad, it just doesn't show them.

If you have ever lived in an apartment and had a couple of them crawl over your face while sleeping, then you would understand where I am coming from. After fumigating, I got rid of all of them, except those that decided my fridge was safe haven. I found them half-frozen in the egg cups--that part of the fridge door that holds the eggs.
Don't get me wrong--I am really not a wimp. I lived in the country while going to college. I can handle mice, june bugs, wasps, bees, mosquitoes, no see 'ems, gnats, snakes and anything else mother nature wants to throw at me. Just not cockroaches--crawling life-like across my screen.
Just based on that poor advertising decision, I will never, ever buy an iPod.
Thanks, Twizzler, I will try the code.

fair do's.
i can honestly say i'll never willingly go near a snake.

setekh, well, the little green ones found in the garden (Garter snakes) don't scare me--but I'd change my tune if a really big rattler or copperhead decided to befriend me!
I guess I am not alone in my disgust for this ad. The help chat has a few boards about it.
Ugh! The person at the advertising agency who thought that one up should be fired. Why couldn't we have Bono dancing and singing "Vertigo" instead of an ugly cockroach?
Wed Dec 29, 2004 12:51 am
I kinda had fun tring to squish the bug myself...lol but I'm weird that way I guess.

nah, scariest snake ive ever seen is an adder, and that was on the other side of a canal.
still, guess i understand why you would dislike them in retrospect (a cockroach on the face would probably put anyone off of them for life..)

ughhhh I can see your point on that, your screenie gave me goosebumps and I knew it was coming, it would shock me even more if I wasnt expecting it...

xjox, it wouldn't be so bad if the stupid bug was in a still pose. But it scurries all over the top of the banner ad--too lifelike for its own good. I need a really big shoe right about now. Or a can of Raid.

I'm so glad I havn't caught that ad yet... I'm the biggest wimp when it comes to bugs, especially wasps and cochroaches... I'd probably scream and attack the computer screen if I saw it... Then the screen would brake and my mom would kill me...
Who the heck thought that would actually sell iPods?

My daughter hasn't gotten that ad yet either. Because of my age, I must look like some wealthy baby boomer willing to plunk down some dough for my kid's iPod. I wouldn't buy one now--even if Bono came to my house to personally ask me to--well, maybe I would (*bats eyelashes*) if he actually shows up at the door--big smile and sunglasses on his face. I would have to be hospitable, you know?
Then I could politely ask him to kill the nasty bug on my screen!

That ad is disgusting! Ewwwww. I hate hate hate roaches! When my roommate first bought this house we had to fumigate and scrub like madwomen - the previous owner had rented most of house out to these truly filthy people - there were flies stuck to the wall, which was covered in grease *still shudders thinking about it* and the fridge was infested with roaches.
There's a TV ad for an exterminating company that has a roach running across the screen - I can't stand to watch that one either.
This, along with the Loony Toons and whatever the blank ad is that tries to d/l some kind of nasty Active X (the name on view source is partner-source and partnersource) - I already got hit with that ... and the only 2 places I've been is here (just forum - not even the front page) and Neo. Plus I know it's Neo because I get an IE alert asking if I want to run an Active X script! The callwave ad IMO is not a good thing either - that stuff is loaded with spyware.
Who knows how many kids are clicking these ads, going off site, ending up who knows where, downloading (either deliberately - a "cute" cursor or inadvertantly - driveby spyware) and messing up the computer.
And just so you all know? You know how premium doesn't see banner ads? Well guess what, I still know when the Loony Toons ad would be on a page - my mouse twitches a little - doesn't go nuts like on my other account that doesn't have premium - but it definitely acts a little weird.

I must admit when I saw this topic I thought, "it can't be THAT bad"
... then I got the ad
I'm scared to death of spiders and other creepy-crawlies and when I saw this ad I just about went through the roof, me being the baby I am yelped as well.
That would NOT be what I would choose to try to sell I-Pods.
