Freezing Appeal

Thu Dec 16, 2004 9:27 pm

I'm just curious as to what others think of my message to Neopets, pertaining to the freezing of my 3 accounts on December 6, 2004. I filled out the main forms and just got the automated reply back.

Thank-you for the automated reply.

I am, however, in strong disagreement with the conditions under which my Neopets accounts, lord_nword, nword_eagle, and nword_mule were frozen. The official statement is that these names were deemed inappropriate.
While I certainly see that there was a possible connection of wording that led to my accounts' freezings, I have found clear cause to contest this judgement. I hope you will take the time to read through my arguments and reconsider this issue.

1. The screenname lord_nword and its variants truely have absolutely no intended relation to the "n word." nword is intended to be pronounced like sword. This was the idea that was first considered when creating the alias.
2. No one has EVER complained to me about this alias; not on Neopets or anywhere else on the internet (or even in real life). I have used this name for several years, including 3.5 years on Neopets. I have only ever received a single question about the name, and the person was satisfied with my apologetic explanation.
3. I had a disclaimer on my user lookup that stated the above.
4. I am not racist. I have too many African American friends to count. (Not to mention other minorities)
5. If someone reported me, I would like to see the complaint.
6. I suspect #5, because other people with similar names have not been frozen:
accounts: fword, nword, bword, n_word, b_word
pets: fword, f_word, b_word
7. As shown by #6, my 3 accounts were the only ones to be frozen.
(lord_nword, nword_eagle, nword_mule)
8. lord_nword is definitely obscurely offensive. If I had wanted to insult someone, then I would have made it obvious. The other names listed in #6 are also obscurely offensive, although the ones with an underscore in them have a clearer meaning.
9. Just about anyone's username could be shown to be offensive in some way.
10. It took 3.5 years before you deemed my account name inappropriate!?!? My name has been on the News page (for Gallery Spotlight), and I never received a complaint.
11. Being frozen was a great birthday present. [/sarcasm]

Thank-you for your time, and I truly hope for a just consideration of this freezing.

Sincerely,
~Eric R.

(I did spellcheck it, after posting here, hehe)

I think I've made a strong case for myself... How about everyone else?

I'd remove some of the stinging humor from it.
Sarcasm is not going to get you unfrozen. =/
Other than that, it looks very well written.

Thu Dec 16, 2004 9:40 pm

Yeah, ditto that. I don't think the birthday present comment was necassary. Other than that, looks good.

Thu Dec 16, 2004 9:42 pm

good luck with that hope it works :)

Nice letter, but a little strong. If they feel intimidated, they won't help you. :(

But I agree...there are TONS of pet names and account names of hateful/bad nature in the system untouched. I really think when an account gets reported, they should email the complaint to the person...even if they remove the reporter's user for obvios reasons it would be a nice gesture to let people know they were reported, even if it doesn't involve being iced...

*points to above and looks at clock* I was able to find those myself in under two minutes. You'd think if it was such a concern, they'd put a filter to the database and look some of those up....*shrug*

Good luck though...:) Hope you get your account back. I'm sad to hear you lost your beautiful fat elephante. :(

JasEdit: Please do not use words that are in the filter. I see your purpose and I understand why you posted them, but you have to be mindful of everyone reading these boards. Thank you very much. :)

True... But at this point I almost don't care. I'm quite well enjoying myself on my new account.

I figure that I had 10 (well # 10 was pushing it too) good reasons... That's a nice round number :)

I'd already sent the message in an email (along with the automated message of course) when I posted this thread...

I do intend to send a (possibly handwritten) letter to Neopets with essentially the same message (more serious of course) eventually.

My only regret with the email I sent is that I didn't start number 11 with [sarcasm] ... since I suppose that would make it possible to interpret the entire message as sarcastic...

Thanks for the comments...

If I do get my account back, Anarcheck is going to my new account... hopefully they won't notice... (yeah right)

On the bright side, val, they seem to have coincidentally taken notice of those names over the last 15 minutes and frozen them.

Convenient. :D

*mutters*

Well there goes my account :)

Maybe...

The accounts in my message are still there.

It's funny how this happens almost every time. I'm not saying it's a bad thing that they are frozen, but you know couldn't they hire someone with a dirty mind to just do those searches once a day like Val just did (not that she has a particularly dirty mind) and delete those accounts that are blaringly obvious?

Hahahahahaha....and so they are. :)

TNT must be lurking again....

*pokes them with a stick* :D

Shall I go for broke and look up a new list of names and see if it happens again? ;) (Only ones that are indeed horribly inappropriate, and not the least "iffy" that is.) :D

*goes to look*

Hahahaha...it's okay...I'm used to being told that, I'd just say I'm well educated in profanity...a friend of mine once made a huge list of words banned in neopets, and he would go and try each one of them. I was able to keep provinding him tons of dirty words (which were censored) most of which he was like "Erm....what does THAT one mean?" *lol*

JasEdit: Please do not double post.

That is really sadistic, some of those account namexs. I cannot believe -edited- has not been frozen, among most all others. It is horrible.

However, I must say that your name on PPT made me think of that 'word' immediately, and not nword like a sword. You'd have to explain your name to everyone on Neopets who looks at your userlookup, IMHO, for you NOT to get eventually frozen.

JasEdit: Do not use words that are inappropriate.

3. I had a disclaimer on my user lookup that stated the above.

...

Granted, I'm not sure that the HTML worked properly in every single browser...

I took 30 seconds. I thought of three names to find. I searched for 'em. All three came up. All three were unfrozen.

-edited-

Obviously should be frozen... Just read the description

-edited-

Again, reading the description shows everything. It was obviously meant to be dirty.
I tried three things. They all worked.

I agree, they should hire someone to search for those things.

If me and Val can find 'em, surely TNT can.

All three worked.

Yet, nword is frozen.

Crazy.

JasEdit: Please do not use inappropriate language.

That ain't the half of it.....Neopia has a very dark underbelly out there regarding pet/user names. Nice finds there!

Her you go TNT....I know you're lurking. :) Have a go at this list I just found for yas. :P

If TNT is reading this thread, they should unfreeze lord_nword. I never considered that name offensive, and the fact that he had a disclaimer on his userlookup proves he didn't mean for it to be. Plus, like he said, he had the account for more than three years and won competitions with it and everything! It just seems unfair.

That's a good letter, Lord Nword. I was frozen before (for "cheating" on a flash game -- I didn't; it was that Volcano Run bug that got a bunch of people frozen a couple years ago), and I got my account back with a polite, reasonable letter like yours (well, a couple of them). Good luck. :)
