I'm considering starting a guild and I'm just looking for general advice.

I know I want a small private guild where I and select group of my friends can post about whatever's going on in Neopets. I know for sure that I don't want something that's going to be high maintainace where I'll have to spend two hours everyday just trying to manage what's going on.

I guess to start my questions:

Does the name of my guild have to be unique? Especially if it is only a private guild?
If my guild is private, will other people be able to browse it if they find it via my lookup for instance?
If they can find it, will I be able to control how much of the guild they see?
Based on my goals stated above, would a guild even suit these goals?

I'll probably have some more questions, but this is good to start conversation I guess. :)

Edit: Cool post count: 888 8)

Does the name of my guild have to be unique? Especially if it is only a private guild? No if it is just for you and your friends, call it what you like!:)

If my guild is private, will other people be able to browse it if they find it via my lookup for instance? Nope, they will get a "You are not a member of this guild message" and the only way they will be able to see or join the guild is if you or someone in the guild sends them an invite.

If they can find it, will I be able to control how much of the guild they see? Only members of your guild or people who have been invited can see anything related to your guild.

Based on my goals stated above, would a guild even suit these goals? I don't see why not!:) You can do as much or as little as you like in your own guild. You can always give some of you friends 'admin powers' and they could help out with the guild too.

If you decide to make your guild public and try to get a lot of members, I have one bit of advice: DON'T PROMISE THEM MONEY! While this is a good way to get a lot of members fast, you'll be losing a lot of money in the process, not to mention most of the members will join for the prize and then leave to do that in another guild.

I don't really have any advice about private guilds though.

Thanks! Your answers make it seem a great deal easier than I imagined (I usually blow things like this out of proportion in my head). I guess I'll just go ahead and make one.

Does the name of my guild have to be unique? Especially if it is only a private guild? If you want it to be unique, thats fine. For a public guild, its almost a must, but for a private one it is not necessary.
If my guild is private, will other people be able to browse it if they find it via my lookup for instance? They will be able to see the name of it, but that is all. Once they click on it, to bring them to the actual guild, they will not be able to get anything out of it except for a "You are not a member of this guild" message.
If they can find it, will I be able to control how much of the guild they see? Nope, other than a message, they don't see anything. If it was public, all they would see is the front page of the guild, but you don't have to worry about that.
Based on my goals stated above, would a guild even suit these goals? Certainly! I don't see why not, anyways. Admin powers are cool, especially the ones that let you delete your own posts. That way when you make a mistake you can delete it before anyone notices! :P

Good luck with your guild!

The guild name matters to an extent but not a lot. I suggest on not making your guild privated anyway since it is harder to get 100+ members. Use it to start and advertise it as private, get 10 members. Un-private it then they will invite people and a lot of people will join.

No!

They Can't Find it.

Yes, and some do.

Thanks everyone. I really had some misconceptions about private guilds. I thought that the name had to be unique (like a username). I also wanted to make sure that people couldn't poke their nose into my business or my friend's business for that matter.

One final question:

I've invited my boyfriend to join the guild. All of the people in the guild know us in real life and wouldn't have a problem with anything we say because we keep it decent. My main question is, would we have to be careful not to say something simple like "I love you" lest we trigger some autofreeze device? If that is going to be a concern, I can simply warn him about it and we won't mention anything about being boyfriend/girlfriend in the guild, but it would be much simpler if I can just refer to him for what he is.

hyper, just to be on the safe side, I would keep any and all talk of "I love you", boyfriend, girlfriend, etc. off the guild (and off the site). Just refer to your bf as his user name or safe nickname - same goes for you.

If I can get a warning for typing the word ebay on my guild board (was looking for a McD plushie), then anything "personal" could be misconstrued. And it does say something in the chat rules about not talking about bf/gf ...

Thanks, I figured as much. I just wanted to ask to be on the safe side. Don't want to lose my account over something stupid like that.

Of course, this would be the perfect time to use each other's pet names.

Then again, I don't know if I'd like being called HyperHound386. :P ;)

Actually, to this extent I believe it does have to be unique. For example there is already a guild called "The Exclusive A-List" (its a private but very popular one and you'd only have to spend a couple of hours on the Neoboards before hearing about it), you would not be able to call your guild "The Exclusive A-List" exactly as it is written for the other guild that already has that name.
