Archaeologists excavated eight houses from the wooden settlement, but they believe there may be at least 25 more dwellings. Each home was approximately five by five meters.

Using carbon dating, the scientists estimate the houses at Durrington Walls were constructed around 2600 B.C., during the same period as Stonehenge, a circle of massive stones that enclose a series of concentric rings.

This is awesome! Up until now, there were pretty much only theories that Stonehenge wasn't built in isolation, but this finally proves it.

The article also says that there was a similar circle, made out of wood, in the village, but that circle seemed to have been used for celebrations while the Stonehenge was used as a place of honor.

How interesting. From the article, it seems as if the wooden settlement was this civilization's place to party hardy and Stonehenge was perhaps their place for atonement. Sort of similar to way modern civilization is set up: a bar/brothel and a church (for confession) within walking distance of it.

Wow, that's cool.

Everytime we convince ourselves that we know our own ancestors, we're totally proven wrong.

I'm wondering how come this wasn't discovered sooner ... Stone Hedge is after all ... a big tourist destination ... and all those hedonistic parties that occur there every year ...

Hold onto your seats people... the SL is back.

I think the hedonism is your key word here. ;)
Not exactly totally with it I would say.

I imagine it was mostly a case of not looking in the right places, it's absolute murder to get any kind of planning permission in the area (As I recall, it took Years to get the permission to build a road nearby, as they were afraid the heavy machinery would damage the henge)

The British society of cultural heritage (I think that's their name?) Guards their places jealously.
And steals stuff from Egypt admittedly.

Yes, but we've all desecrated our share of tombs for the artifacts within, haven't we? I know I'm banned from the local veterans' cemetery for that reason.

Oh, no, you didn't take a flag from a gravestone, did you? One of those tiny ones that you can get for about 39 cents at the local party store. *snicker*
