I go to school in Denver, and those jerks recently (a few years back) moved the start of school to August 20-somethingth, but at least they moved the start of summer vacation to sometime near the end of May. Why? They thought that students would have more time to study for CSAPS, and it would raise Denver's crappy grades. Starting school in August, when NO school I have heard of has and air conditioning system that works, is SADISTIC. Now, and with NO warning, school is starting in a week, on July 26th! They never gave us any mail- if my sister wasn't doing a project thingy on DPS we wouldn't know! It's like they're trying to keep it secret! AND we didn't get any expanded summer vacation. Personally I like my three months. Now we have slightly less than two months. Jerks. If I was going somewhere like Hogwarts, I could cope! But Middle School is the Prison of Insanity. I JUST regained my sanity from it and I'm going back! I feel condemned...

Plus I don't have any time to work on my Halloween costume! AND my school doesn't have air conditioning. But what's horrible, is they moved it to July because school in August didn't do anything for the average CSAP score in DPS. So if we do better, they'll figure it works, and keep school in July and summer vacation WAY too short, and if we do worse or don't make a difference, they'll figure we haven't started early enough and start school in June, so we get less than a month of summer vacation! All DPS cares about are results. They don't care about students or teachers or anything- and if you don't care about taking *sensible* means to improve your scores, you won't get results. I wouldn't be surprized if the rate of students rebelling and being suspended went up- I wouldn't be surprised if the rate of student suicide went up. Hearing the news triggered a pretty serious depression in me, smaller only than the time where my every thought was occupied by Braveheart, I listened to Simon and Garfunkel all day, and was yelled at by everyone I knew. (Not that Braveheart and Simon and Garfunkel aren't some of the greatest things since Tolkien.)

There was no warning. If I'm the only one to show up on the first day of school, I won't be surprised.

One more thing- west nile and similar diseases have increased risks so deep in summer. Morey is in a mosquito-full area. At the beginning of school, lots of people were getting sick just from stuff in the air! So- Denver Public Schools doesn't CARE. I want to sign a petition, but we'd need at least a billion signatures for them to even make eye contact with us! Why? DPS doesn't CARE about students, because they're only stupid brats! Right? *sarcasm*

July 26th?!?!

:o

I don't blame you for being angry. I would be ticked off, too. Is there any way you can convince your parents to let you stay home?
(I wonder if there's enough time for the teachers to organize a union strike. Probably not.)

Wow, they didn't bother to send out any letters or anything? That's quite stupid of them. What about all of the students who are away on holiday thinking they have more vacation time left? I wonder how many students will be absent the first few weeks of school.

I'm sorry they are dragging you back to classes so soon. Have the parents considered going to a town or school board meeting to discuss the issue? It seems like this spur of the moment change would not only put more pressure on the students, but on the teachers and parents as well.

Just go on holiday now. They can't expect you to heed them when you are on holiday during a time thats supposed to be holiday.

Yeah, what Christopher said. Go on a vacation to, say, Hawaii, for about a month. Then when you come back, they'll yell at you, and you'll have a perfectly good defense for missing a month of school. If they take it any further, well, you can always start a lawsuit. :P

(That was a joke.)

Seriously, that sucks though.

That actually sounds like a good idea though...

I'd just pretend I didn't know about school and took a longer holiday :D

But you get 2-3 months off school for a summer holiday?! :o Lucky! Here in "sunny" England we only get 6 weeks, if that! The only reason that I've been off school for so long is because I've been on study leave, doing exams and actually left school for good. Personally, I wouldn't complain but it's not what you're used to so that's horrible!

Complain to the school or something! It's disrupting your education isn't it? Start a rebellion, that would liven things up a bit if you do have to go to school 8)

As I said, nobody pays attention to the students. I'll check the official DPS webby, maybe something's wrong with Morey's! Maybe a student hacked in as a prank (students make the websites, almost all the adults are completely computer-illiterate). 6 weeks at most? You poor English! They really grind your noses to the... ah... whatever. *confused with sayings... feeling very dyslexic today @.@* And this also means there's no back to school sales, so we have to get everything at full price and crap. What about families with no internet, who don't check the Morey webby? I know there are some- a few days ago, I was one! (My internet went ballistic). They don't seriously expect us to go to the library just to check the website, do they?

That little summer vacation? At least feel happy that you're not in Japan, they go to school for 270 days out of the year (though some may like that). All you can hope for now is that they give you more winter vacation, because then you won't have to travel to school in difficult conditions. Sure, there will be fewer snow days, but that means all the more summer vacation for you.

As for not notifying the people who go to the school, that's just plain stupid.

You'll almost certainly get the lost summer vacation days back at some other point in the year. Increasing the total number of days students attend school means increasing the total number of days that the staff work at the school, which is not fiscally sound and would most likely violate union contracts.

I feel bad for you. I wouldn't mind going to school at the end of August- I'm pretty sick of summer by then. But July? I'm just getting used to my freedom!

Whoever made that decision needs to find a brain.

Nope. In fact they decrease holidays- see the calendars at http://www.dpsk12.org .

But! My friend's mom says school starts on August 17th, and registration's on the 7th. I hope she's right, although where does she get her information if DPS says in big black letters on the 26th, First Day of School?
