Some Photos...

Tue Aug 17, 2004 1:03 am

Anywho.
I'm rather proud of my farm, so I thought i'd show it off.
The house is over 100 years old, though in the 60's it was MOVED, and then they gave the house a basement (rather then a cellar). The original glass on the building (which was replaced soon after) never broke in the whole move. Which gives credit to the fact that my great grandfather on my mothers side built the house.
The massive trees that you see (the pines) were planted in 1914, and are giants. They're quite beautiful and are a wonderful shelterbelt that keeps the wind out. The only way you know it's windy when you're standing in the front yard (which is where the photos were taken) is that the trees tops will sway. Unfortunately this winter one of the trees tops snapped off, but it's bound to happen. A few of the smaller ones have died, but we're careful to replant any baby trees we find so that we can keep our shelterbelt intact!

My farm is now 360 some odd acres large, which equals about two quarters of land (or so the saying goes up here). We have both grain fields (currently canola and wheat) along with pasture land for cattle. We rent out the pasture land to our neighbours, who graze their cattle there (they're cute, and evil all at once). We also rent out the farm land.
This is the view of one of our fields taken by me, whilst riding.

And riding...
As most of you know, i've got horses. I own two horses.
The first being the most important is Smoky.
Image
This image was taken this weekend. Smoky is a 16 year old Fleabitten grey arabian gelding (meaning he's been neutered). Smoky was abused quite badly when he was young and is scared of men. He dislikes our vet (who is the only person Smoky has ever bit!) and he's afraid of brightly colored objects, land marks, things he's seen for the past 11 years, people, dogs, the other horses... to be honest, he's afraid of everything under saddle. But he's a sweetheart on the ground. I can take him anywhere (including the porch of our farmhouse... but don't tell my parents). You can barely see them in the picture, but theres a large dark mark on his neck (a scar) and his knees are also scarred. These weren't inflicted by us, as I said; he was abused before we got him.

Warg is a horse we bought to replace our old QH. Warg is a retired QH Warmblood cross. He has navicular (a degenerative disease of the foot) and is unsuitable for riding. He likes to bite me, and only me. And he likes to bully Buddy.
Image

Buddy is our renters horse. I actually don't know what his name is, though he's been at our farm for over a month. He's a horrible ride, he smells weird, and he likes to aggrivate Warg. He's a nice boy, bigger then both Smoky and Warg, and he likes to nuzzle people. He's a sweet personality and he whinnies loudly for his grain. Since our renters in Libya (working in the oil fields), he's our charge at the moment.

Anywho, thats really it for now... thats my farm and my boys. Tee hee. Thought i'd just share....

That field is to die for ahoteinrun. I love it, I also like your horses there cool, but the field, cool...I have thing for big fields. I live next to a farm, it kjinds surrounds are house. The farmers field is barren though, I think hes letting the ground rest or something like that. But that must be fun to live on a big farm like that, looks like hard work though.

It's not a lot of work for us. We don't live there. We rent out the top of the farm house (to the guy who works in Libya), and we use the basement much like a cottage. My parents want to retire there sometime in the near future.
We rent out the fields as well, they're ours (we pay taxes for them, so they're definately ours) but if the crops fail, we don't lose money. Same with the cattle. It's a safer way for us to farm.
Plus, the people who rent the land, don't have to pay taxes on it. So, our farm is used.
And yeah. Using fields for crops takes a lot out of the ground. So resting a field for a year is pretty common.

:o So. much. SPACE. Wow you live in such a nice place! (Even though you rented out some only) In our place, you have to be really rich to live in houses >.< or large large apartments/flats. *sigh*

I like the horses :3 Wish i could go riding in a field sometime. You know, like in some movies? XD The view in autumn and spring must be very beautiful! And perhaps the snow? (Does it snow?) And the swing in the first picture; it looks fun :D

My friend in U.S also lives in a really large place >.< it's really really nice!

Well we live a couple hours away in a large city (but in a house). My parents moved into the house here, while my grandparents were still living on the farm. Like that year, my grandfather passed away due to cancer, and my granmother moved into the town close by our farm.
So then we started renting it out.
*shrugs*
I think it's stuff from movies. Theres a lot of rolling hills, and it's fun to ride (if you've got a good horse, which my arab is not). Our old horse, Sargent was the better riding horse. And Buddy seems to be taking his place. Smokys too spooky to ride in the field.
When I get winter picture (meaning when I find them) maybe i'll post them. It snows... A LOT.
My farms in Central Alberta, Canada. And in the area we're in (which is a glacial flat) theres a tendancy towards deep fog. And when theres fog in winter we get some great horror frost (which is the ice cover on trees that make them white).
Yup. Lotsa snow.

Wow, that's great! The scenes come out terrifically with a good camera. You know the ones the photographers show in galleries? Those prettyful scenes.

I love Canada! It's so peaceful and pretty! Now I seriously wonder why I didn't stay last time when we visited XD

That field is quite fantastic you know, in New Zealand you wouldnt be able to find anywhere like that, it'd be interupted by mountains, hills, the coastline, and too much green.

Anyway, I'd also love to have a large section like that, though I'm not too keen on horses (or pets) myself.

Oh...so you think all of Canada is like that? Take another look. ;P *points to the industrialised areas of Vancouver and Toronto*

Aaah...I just can't get enough of looking at that field. Must be awesome, to have such nice and quiet times there. Hammock looks inviting too. What an awesome place for retirement. o_o

Actually we visited both the industrialised Vancouver and the country side Vancouver. I think it's way better than Hong Kong. Really (but the shopping malls in HK are somewhat just great XD). I could actually breathe properly.

Aaaaah, thats my retirement dream, to retire on some farm - although I'd prefer mine surrounded by New Zealand bush, maybe nestled on a hill side somewhere.

And raise chickens. I've got a thing for retirement and chickens.

Nice lookin' farm, by the way!

Wow, i'm so jealous of you! So much land... Theres always somewhere to be alone. And the horses :o I used to ride horses when I was younger... I wish to own another one when I get older and move back to the states.
The only thing I wouldn't want is the 100 year old house... I don't like old houses...

Oh my. That's beautiful, I really envy you! Canada is the one place I've always wanted to go. I'd love to live there. You've a right to be proud of where you live.

I was goosed by Noelle... Don't ask

Your farm is gorgeous, Ahote. Goodness, I gasped so loudly when I saw that first picture... It kind of reminds me of a personal experience of mine from a long time ago, and the fields were just like that. It was so peaceful and beautiful... I'd love to own a farm, but I don't think I'd ever be able to keep up with the strenuous maintenence and everything. *sighs* Oh, the things I would do if I had the time and money...
