Unusual hobbies

Wed Jan 28, 2009 6:58 pm

So you guys are from everywhere in the world... some people will think that tossing the caber, dancing a jig and singing odd songs about a 'wee cooper wha lived in Fife... nickety nackety noo noo noo' Which are fairly commonplace if you're in Scotland (yes, I'm one of those singers and I can do a highland fling... I'd give the caber a toss, if the tree was a very very young sapling :P)

Do you guys have unusual hobbies?

I'm also a female wrestler... I think it's quite unusual, mainly because I'm the only one in the club... and I'm sure the county. My mum keeps telling me to take up a more ladylike hobby like knitting... I think not.

I do Irish stepdancing competitively, and I also have taught myself the Irish language (though I really need to start studying again, and find someone local to talk to in it). Both are unusual enough in the Southern U.S. that I'm often asked to give a little demonstration on the spot of either (which I always try to gracefully refuse).

If I move back to the beach (I'd love to when I graduate in May, if I can find a job), I'd probably make bodysurfing a hobby of mine again, which I guess is unusual for anyone who doesn't live near a beach.

Wow, that's pretty awesome... Irish dancing's awesome... it's quite a big thing here in Scotland. Although anything with a surfboard is always a bit different to us.

I want to learn Scots gaelic fluently.. it'll give me more job potential and I've got my cousins who're all fluent to practice on.

Bodysurfing doesn't use a board -- basically, you just ride the wave using just your body. It requires no balance, just timing. :)

I just googled it to see if I could find a picture/video, and I am not one of those hard-core swim-fin extreme bodysurfers (I grew up on the East Coast of the U.S., so the biggest wave I've ever taken is probably 6-8' (measured East Coast, not Hawaiian style.) The new prez is more at my bodysurfing level (although I prefer to push off the bottom instead of swimming to catch the wave, and I like a longer ride).

Haha - anything involving a rash guard and a diving suit and it's exotic... our coasts are a little too chilly to be doing the dunky dunk... without a trained professional and a heater capible of restoring frostbite.

Sounds cool though... something I could try on a holiday!

I hunt for "treasures" in the wilderness, with the aide of a GPS Unit. xD

I prefer to watch hockey games with the coverage in French, despite understanding only English and Spanish. I'm also interested in doing radio or voiceover work wherever I can get it.

Oh oh oh me too! I wiki-surf, which isn't that uncommmon, but terribly fun. You learn the most random facts from it. My friends and I play this game, where you have to get from page A to B on wiki - say, ABBA to Pandas - in the fewest links possible. You have to keep a record of the pages you used as a bridge, in between. :D

I juggle. Not well, mind you, but I've got the beginner's knowledge of object throwing, contact juggling, diabolo, and poi. Will eventually get started on pins and mills mess, but one step at a time. =P
