You can die of drinking too much water and not peeing.
I just think this is so sad, because the lady was trying to win something for her kids, and then she died. She complained of her head hurting and went home. They shouldn't have let her go home, but checked her into the the hospital. But who could have known she would die?

What a stupid contest. You pee for a reason.

Still, what a shame. :(

that is so sad. can you imagine what thats going to do to her 3 young children, mommy died trying to win us a prize, thats just awful.

It doesn't say how long she held it for. I mean, did she drink water for 2 hours, then die 3 hours later? or drink water for 4 hours and die 9 hours later?

And this sounds silly, but you'd think if you have to pee so badly you're going to die, you'd think her bladder would have kicked in and just gone, and she would have wet her pants. Or peed when she got home. Maybe she did though and this was an after effect? It also doesn't say what kind of water it was. Some bottled water has so much junk in it it's got ingredients, and that's just wrong.

Edit: None of the articles I've found answer too many questions, but since she died the same day, it has to be at least less than 12 hours. Because the contest probably started, then she was found the same day, so.

I also found this while searching: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/ ... death.html Woman dies in marshmallow eating contest. Thought it was another stupid contest.

It is a stupid contest - it's not unheard of for people to die of drinking too much water, though it's not exactly common (usually happens in extremely hot conditions, people don't realise how much they've had). Horrible, really, and I hope the contest organisers realise what a bad idea it was.

My husband found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication

A person with two healthy kidneys can excrete about 1.5 litres of water per hour at maximum filtration (other studies find the limit to be as little as 0.9L/h [1]). Consuming as little as 1.8 litres of water in a single sitting may prove fatal for a person adhering to a low-sodium diet, or 3 litres for a person on a normal diet.

That's my thought as well. I am severely allergic to Splenda and for some reason, I am finding it hidden in just about everything, especially flavored waters and energy drink. So, it is very possible that some sponsor provided the water and it had something like splenda or aspartame (another chemical that many people are allergic to). And she had an allergic reaction to it. But even if it was plain old water, the radio station sure sounds like it is guilty of some type of neglect or reeklessness. First off, they should be running their stunts by a medical professional to make sure that the stunt can't kill anyone. And then run it by their lawyer--for liablity issues. And then be smart enough to realize that if a contestant says she doesn't feel good, call an ambulance for her, rather than let her go home.

What I don't understand is this? Why didn't she pee before she left the station?

EDIT: Nevery mind that last question. I just learned that if you drink too much water, your kidneys can actually shut down--because of the electrolyte imbalance.

Poor thing. Still and all, you would think that she would have realized at some point that she needed to stop. After all, anyone with any smarts would realize that if something goes into the body, it has to come out or you will get sick if it doesn't.

I heard today on GMA that three people from the radio station had been fired.

They fired the three DJs from the morning show and cancelled it indefinitely and fired 7 other people (Not sure if they are DJs are other staff members).

I know because it's in my city and I used to (and sometimes still do) listen to that radio station. Plus, it's been on the local news a LOT.

I personally hope the seven other people fired were the upper management who OKed this contest.
