Craft Materials?

Sun Nov 20, 2005 2:30 am

OK. This one's a little confusing. I'm working on costumes for a "play" me and my niece and nephew are doing together. Does anyone know what would be good to make a tie? I'm not paying for one, my dad doesn't have any...

Any ideas?

Take an old pillowcase or sheet, cut it into a strip, and then paint it?

might i recommend paper cut and colored into the desired shape/pattern?

Do you have/can you run out and get some felt? That's very inexpensive, you can cut it into a basic tie shape, it won't ravel or fray and you can just pin the tie shape to your shirt.

Alternately, ties only cost about a dollar or so at most thrift stores. I mean, I know you said you didn't want to pay for one, but surely that's less than the cost of most materials...

Ties are rather cheap objects. Even from a normal non-thrift shop.

Not always, I see a lot of ties that are about $26.00. And that seems to be the average price of them around here.

Where in hell do you shop?

Problem. Our nearest store is 15 miles away.

I may do the paper thing. That's what I was thinking about. Then just tape it to our clothing. :)

uhh...do you have a JC pennys or something? you can find a tie for a few bucks at most stores

There is NOTHING near me. I'm 14 miles away from civilization, and it's supposed to be a secret.

might i recommend the bus? :) I know what its like to live in the middle of no where... not fun. you could also draw the sape of the tie onto your shirt and color it using water based (ie crayola) markers.

I'm not in DM's part of the country, but I can assure you...there is no bus for her to take. Public transportation is pretty much nonexistant in the US once you leave the major cities. Some large towns might have a few bus lines, but they usually do not leave the town at all, and the routes are very limited. I live in one of the largest cities in Indiana, and only in the past 5 to 10 years did the bus system actually get started, and it's still pretty inefficient and does not go outside of the city limits. I'd love to take the bus to work right now, but with the routes I would have to take, it would take an extra hour for me to get here, and I'm not getting up at 5:30 in the morning. :P

But err, back on the topic, I haven't any other suggestions, and I'm guessing it's too late to suggest now anyway. Which solution did you pick, and how'd they turn out, DM?
