Canada is one of those countries that have so little to do with NZ. Somehow I doubt I'll see enormous maple leaves stapled to anyones houses.

Fri Jul 01, 2005 12:02 pm

Dan, I am going to lay off insulting you for a whole day.

I also got the Top Ten Mthys About Canadians:

Top Ten Myths About Canada and Canadians

1. We live in igloos. We live in houses, and they are very well built houses.

2. Canadians do not have the same technology as Americans. Canadians have access to the same technology as Americans and the rest of the industrialized world.

3. There is snow everywhere all year long. Anyone who has spent a summer in Vancouver,Toronto, or Montreal will strongly disagree with this.

4. We don't get the same movies Americans do. We get the same movies, on the same day, and our censorship is less severe. Furthermore, the Paramount theater in Montreal is the most attended and most lucrative movie theater in North-America.

5. Canada does not have a film industry. We have a thriving film industry, and many of the syndicated US TV shows, not to mention major studio motion pictures are filmed here. Canada is renowned to have some of the best production crews in the world.

6. Canadians all say "eh" and "aboot". Sure, some of us do, but Canada is a big country with many different people who speak many different languages with different dialects.

7. Everyone in Quebec speaks French. Although a large percentage of the Province's population is Francophone, there is also a large number of Anglophones and Allophones.

8. Canadians have fewer guns than Americans. Canadians have just as many, if not more; we just have fewer murders. If you want stats and figures, see Michael Moore's excellent documentary, Bowling for Columbine.

9. Canada's national sport is Hockey. Not completely true. While Hockey is very popular, and considered our national pastime, our national sport is Lacrosse. Oh, and we invented Baseball too.

***In 1994, the Federal Government introduced Bill C-212 that officially made Hockey Canada’s National Winter Sport and Lacrosse Canada’s National Summer Sport. Thanks Rolly! So the answer is both!***

10. Canadians policemen are all Mounties dressed in red uniforms. Our cops are the same as American cops. The Mounties usually only dress up in red for for special occasions

Happy Birthday Canada!!
Also, early happy birthday for those to the south!
As well as an early happy birthday to me(3rd)!!

I get to watch lots of fireworks and get presents! My favourite time of year...

Yeah, the red for Mounties is the dress uniform (they earn different part of it by passing different things at the training centre in Regina).

I think the Guess Who should be on the famous Canadians list (Randy Bachman, Burton Cummings).

Fri Jul 01, 2005 3:44 pm

Good for you Canada!
I'll remember Canada when I see Justice League today!

Fri Jul 01, 2005 3:50 pm

3. There is snow everywhere all year long. Anyone who has spent a summer in Vancouver,Toronto, or Montreal will strongly disagree with this

Hmm.
Apparently theres snow all year in Alberta, Sask, Winnepeg, the Maritines and in the territories (Ok. So that ones a bit more plausible in some places up north).

Robert Bateman is another rather famous canadian.
Not to mention the Group of Seven painters.
Chris Cran has some wickedly cool art as well! (I've met him, he's a nutball, what a nice guy!)

Who was Scottish :) Moved to Canada and became a US citizen, hence him being named as top American/Canadian/Brit...but still Scottish ;P

Guglielmo Marconi was an Italian who worked in Canada a little. The inventor of television is harder to pinpoint but it's widely recognised as being John Logie Baird of Scotland. Other people came later with the cathode ray tv but I've never heard mention of Fessenden anywhere, only Farnsworth (US) and Campbell-Swinton (Scottish). The rest of that site is good but they seem a little confused about the inventions, I'm sure there are plenty of Canadian inventions rather than things just invented while the person was in Canada or even if they just worked in Canada at some point o_O

Ahem, anyway.... Happy Canada Day! :D

Fri Jul 01, 2005 4:27 pm

I wanted some beaver meat today, but the local igloo was closed, so I was out of luck.
I'm Canadian, and nothings open eh?

Fri Jul 01, 2005 5:43 pm

Yay Canada Day! :D

...And of course, the CBC/Parliament Hill celebrations are boring, and Vancouver doesn't have fireworks anymore after they cancelled it over the fact that the crowds were considered "too dangerous." I was in one of the largest ones the year before, and I'm still alive and well. Meh.

There's still the 40th flag anniversary and the 25th anthem anniversary though. Cool. And happy centennials to Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Well, at least there's...Live 8 starting tomorrow? Hehe. :P
