I meant it as you relied too much on it, you know how when you center yourself on a certain topic? That's what I meant, if it makes sense.

But isn't that the basis of good art? To have a focal point? The original image that i chose is very stong and moving, imo, and I wanted the focus to be on it. So I made it the focal point.

In some ways it is. It's a very tricky thing, focal points, you have to pick it so precisely. I personally think you could've zoomed out a little, shown more of her hair and certain things like that.

I believe Moogie was focusing on the part of the face he felt was most expressive. By zooming out and displaying the whole image it doesn't have the same effect on the perciever.

BTW, I hope that people not involved in the competition are allowed to post on this thread. Sorry if they arent.

I also just wanted to say that I think all of you did really beautiful sets. I particularly loved Ethics' and Neko's sets! <3 Nice work.

I guess it's just different for everyone, IMHO, the set would've looked a bit more edgy/mystical if it was a bit more zoomed out.

Actually images in art that are strongly bordered such as the one moogie presented are visually more pleasing then those that would have zoomed out. It's a whole thing with the law of borders and 2Dness. *shrugs* It makes it more 'grounded". But as you said, personal opinion.
(just thought i'd bring that up)

That why there's several of us judges to sort of balance everything out, in the end. (Because personally, I like your image placement, moogie!)

What it comes down to is using what you think is useful and not using what won't help you. In the end you won't always agree with the judges. (If any of you ever agree with everything we say, I'll beat you over the head with a stick.) So yes, there's my 2 cents.

And yay for comments from non-participants! :) (I sure hope they're allowed, too. XD )

Someone asked me to check out a particular post, so I did... I see someone else has also commented on it, but I'm not going to be as subtle about it as they were.
NeoPet_online, I realize that you were probably frustrated after losing your post to a browser problem, but that's no reason to be so snappish.

This I find particularly offensive and out of line, and most dismaying, it's not even out of context.
I expect to see better from you next time; if I don't, I will be issuing you a strike.

I understand. Sorry, it was just frustrating, third time it happened in one night. Again sorry. I will try to be a bit less harsh the next time I have to grade and it happens.

Its certainly frustrating, but keep in mind that this contest is here for it contestants to improve. If you don't offer anything constructive about their work, there's no way for them to do that.
