I was looking at some sketches of a year and a half back. I have a comic I have been working on from about this time. On and off, I should work on it more. Anyway, that's not the topic.

Last week I had a discussion with my teacher of evening classes, that I maybe should start over, because I had evolved.

Tonight I was flipping through some salvaged sketches and colors of a harddisc crash some time ago.

Old character sketch of a main bad guy;

New very recent;

Old one of all (really ashamed of this one, so I'll link :p)

New ones;

Ok, maybe Kuroro has evolved. I just don't wanna start the whole freaking comic over again (I was at page 15 of 46). But, the problem is, the new 'style' is too different to slap in there all the sudden. More inkted, more comic like.

Bleh, don't know to be happy or sad.

Then again, my comic was slacking for a long time.. but lately I re-started working on it, seriously. Until this.

For the reference; a page:

Inrun Edit: *makes an angry face* Bad! Bad Kuroro! Posting pictures over 500 pixels in length! Do it again and i'll whack you something awful with a rolled up newspaper!

Quote:
4. Please don't post overly large works. If a piece of art is large (Over 500 pixels wide or 750 pixels tall or over 700kb in size), please make a thumbnail or text link to the larger version. If a piece of writing is long (Over 1500 words), please post an offsite link.

_edit_ This one I did by computer coloring; just practising.

Wow, thats a big improvement, I love your current drawings, they have so much personality in them. As for redoing the comic, It really depends if you want to spent your time redoing the pages, I dont think it matters that much though.

The coloring is so pretty btw, is that watercolor?

Yes, it is. :) Watercolour, I mean.

Thanks for the comments. I think I will try a page or so in the new style and then decide what to do.

It has changed, yes, and for the better. Like kiay said, it all depends on whether you want to spend your time redoing the pages. The new style is great, I love it. =]

I'd say, if you have the time, there's enough improvement to redo them.

Hey, you got it done once, so you can certainly do it again, and years from when you finish it, if you didn't put in those extra hours to make it the absolute best possible, to make your art your art, your current art, then you won't be able to have as much pride and dignity that you truly tried to make it perfect.

I would most certainly suggest you take the time to redo those 15 pages.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm quite freaking out now. Just had jury (you know, where they comment on your 'art'). They didn't quite like the new things.. in the end it came onto being too classic and not loose enough. Gaah.. Worse, I did some things with pantone markers and they suggested to go in that directions.

It just.. I don't like the colours for pantone markers for comic. I was rather pleased with the inktings I had done now (I struggled for years to get some control over my inkting skills.)

*Sigh* I probably shouldn't freak out as hard, since it are evening classes. But I really want to forward with this project. Go to publishers (I studied in this direction and up until now, I only did some illustrations and websites.)

Maybe I'm running too fast. Bleh.

Those are some very pretty lions! I like the colors in the first (older)drawing, the lines are a bit 'softer' and the shading is more fluent (if you know what I mean, heh).
I love the expression in the last pic, looks like she's winking :) Very nice inking on that one!
Comic looks great, too... I really hope you can find a good publisher! From what I can tell by looking at this page, your style is not 'too classic' or 'not loose enough' at all. Then again, I have a thing for watercolors.

...Are you Dutch? Because I can read the little scribblings :o

I am a Belg, living in the Flemish part, so Dutch speaking. Are you Dutch? Hehe, I don't think I've seen people that could read Dutch around here. But then again, I don't speak Dutch here. *confusing sentences*

---

I love them all, but they don't look so vilain-ish, too cute... it still looks awesome

Yay for Dutch-speaking people! I'm going completely off-topic now.
Ooh, I remember when Neopets was released in Dutch and we had a discussion about how they would translate the petpet name Neuky :oops:

Well, again... awesome work. The watercolors look lovely.

Hehe, oh dear... oh dear, what a petpet. I don't recall it correctly, but I'm sure there where other things in Dutch too.

En hallo iedereen. Zeg, Jens, ken jij Zoo Tycoon? Op die forums was er ook een Jens.

*Goes also back onto topic* Yes, well, I plan to upload a few more things. One computer colored one. *Goes to take a look.* Think that would be no problem.

_edit_ I'm sorry about posting more then 500 pixels length. :(

If I can be brutally honest for a moment.

I know you don't want to rewrite your comic book (I do understand how much work can go into such projects), but if your style has changed this drastically, publishers will not put to print a graphic novel in which the style changes so drastically. Were you to hand it in and ask them to consider it, it would be turned back to you with them most likely siting that you need to have the styles all as one, instead of shifting.

That said.

I quite like your work. It has a style to it, that... isn't as *thinks on the word* it's not typical to what is seen in todays artistic field of comic, and/or of illustrative art. And thats nice. If they're saying that you're not lose enough, from what i've seen of these sketches (which in my eyes are quite loose), then i'm curious as to what your comic book pages actually look like.

Your anatomy with your cats is quite strong, however the picture you just posted of the darigan griffon... eeryie... eryie...(Oiy), thing isn't quite as spot on. The shoulders/hips especially look lumpy rather then muscly and is quite out of proportion in comparison to the head/body.

Still. Love your watercolor work. And i'm curious as to what you did witht he pantone markers. Thats not a brand thats available where I live in Canada... and it makes me wonder whats wrong with the colors.

Well, if I would continue the comic, I would keep my 'old style'. It's true the characters and the drawings became more steady (and better, hopefully). But it was more of a question of changing from soft inkting (in fact, drawing the lines with watercolors, so that they blend more into the background) to black inkting, with real ink. The problem with the watercolours, is that they stiffen up my drawings. But still show my pencil drawings (which was a plus).

Up until now, I never got a 'hang' of inkting with real ink. I practised.. and now I feel more certain.

I did one page with the 'new style'. But, the old paper I used for the previous pages, isn't really working with me. I'm divided on this. All in all, I will for now, just start sending pages with my old style, since it may take a while before I get everything together.

As for the griffon/eyrie; yeah, it isn't right. I have this thing for deforming my creatures sometimes. I like doing just because it's fun and to lay, or to lay power in a certain shape. Don't know quite how to explain it. Sometimes, I feel like deforming/exagarating things is giving me a better 'feel' of anatomy or movement.. odd.
