If you're curious to know what gouache is, it is a higher quality tempra paint. It is very opaque and can lay flat color, or be thinned to act like watercolor. It dries with a matte finish. It is a type of paint professional artists and illustrators use.

I felt like using it after my college adviser recremended I try the gouache media instead of colored pencils. She is not fond of colored pencil.

Gouache is a watercolor type paint and it's opaque.
Tempera is a paint that involves the emulsion (mixture) of oil/water and is older then oil painting.
From what i've learned of using watercolors and gouche, they're best applied in thin layers, and your paintings look rather thick. I find the heavy blue outlines... around the butterfly a bit thick, and distracting.
I think that maybe you should try combining watercolor/gouache with pencilcrayon. Use the gouache as a base and then do shading with the watercolor, I think you'd do very well at that. This way you get the nice shading of your pencil work and your instructor can't fault you for using them.
As well, what kind of instructor frowns against pencil crayons? I mean, my instructors encourage their use. They're useful. Theres a reason they're popular. And if you're in illustration theres quite a base for using pencil crayon with illustration. Your instructors personal likes/dislikes shouldn't have to affect your mediums. Bleh.

Was this a mistake I even bothered painting this? I admit I'm terrible with handleing media. Sorry I get discouraged quickly and easily.

You didn't waste your time. Everything you do is a learning process.
I didn't mean to not put compliments in there. I like your work in general and I didn't say this particular piece was horrible. I just think that if you combined this with your pencil crayon drawings it'd be great.

Practice makes perfect afterall.

I think it looks, beautiful! Straight out of a story book. Very nice. inrun's just getting technical because (I'm assuming) she paints, too. You know these crazy artists. You've got alot of talent, I've been voting for you in the BC, lol. I see what Inrun means about the darker outlines around the butterfly, but it in no way makes it not worthwhile. It looks fantastic.

I've been in a bad mood lately, so I'm sorry for getting upset so easily. Mostly it's stuff outside the relm of neopets that's affecting my mood and self confidence. (having to drop two classes and worries about affording to take college next semester, stuff like that)

I do like playing with different media and this was fun to try. Though I haven't painted with it in a while so the lack of practice. Seems that using pencil on my larger scale assignments falls appart. The instructor was judging by my assignment.

It might have helped had I drawn it bigger and on something other than a small sketchbook. I don't remember the exact dimensions but the origional was not much bigger than the 100 dpi scan. I would say roughly a 3 X 7 sketchbook.

I think it is really pretty. I don't think anything is a waste of time. You learn so much more and something new each time you paint or draw. Sometimes it is easy to get distracted or depressed because you might see other people's work and think they are better than you. But everyone has to start somewhere. And believe me, there are people who will look at your work and wish they could draw as well.

I can't really offer you any critiques of your work as I don't really feel like I am up to it. I like to draw and I know what I like, but I don't know what to say to someone to make their work better. Some people can look at something and tell you if it isn't porportioned correctly, but I say that that is all in the eye of the beholder anyway. Some of the most beautiful art in the world isn't exactly perfect when you analyze it anyway.

A waste of time?! Certainly not! It's beautiful, like all the work you've posted here! I love the wings (the patterning and colours are really pretty), and the little bumblebee hanging on to the ruki's foot is really cute. Beautiful!

If it makes others happy, it's not a waste of time. I think it's a great picture. Better than anything I can do by a long shot.

Ok I'm sorry i said that. I guess I got frustrated with it. The positive thing I see about the bold outlines is that it does help the image show well in the small thumbnail. I think if I could improve it I would have spent more time on the hands.
